Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center

For the Media

In the United States approximately 10% of girls and women (numbering up to 10 million) and 1 million boys and men are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or borderline conditions (Crowther et al., 1992). At least 50,000 individuals will die as a direct result of their eating disorder!
Eating disorders are a pervasive problem in our community, state, country and world. They cross gender, racial, and socioeconomic barriers and the problem is getting worse! There are wonderful stories of recovery and hope to be told; unfortunately, there are also tragic stories of grief and loss. We needs to present all sides of the illness. We need to be responsible as a community to advocate treatment and prevention of these devastating disorders. Please help direct your audience of viewers, listeners and readers to the resources that can assist them and their loved ones in the struggle to overcome these illnesses. Together we can spread the word about the true measure of beauty and self-worth and provide the resources for treatment and prevention. Please feel free to contact us to brainstorm ideas- we have plenty of great ideas and stories to tell!
