Essentially, this enables each patient to receive the utmost attention from a broad professional prospective. Secondly, we ensure regular, meticulous communication amongst our entire treatment team. And finally, our patient’s progress, and ultimately success is the outcome of vigilant observation and recommendations of a unified professional team of experts.

The Walker Wellness Clinic provides exceptional outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with eating disorders, an approach that differs significantly from traditional outpatient treatment. We have the resources to provide an assortment of specialized services that uniquely integrate mental and physical healthcare, managed by our entire professional treatment team. As a result, we offer one of the most all-inclusive outpatient treatment programs available.

We understand that your time is valuable. However, when it comes to caring for you, or your loved one’s health, nothing but the optimal treatment will do. Consequently, we have designed The Standard Outpatient Treatment Program (SOP) to meet the needs of individuals who do not require the intensity of an IOP program but still demand the highest quality care. The Standard outpatient program provides much of the structure of our IOP programs including full treatment team management, individual, family and group therapy, nutrition consultations, psychological, and physiological assessments. However, our standard outpatient program requires only three meetings per week.

The intensive outpatient treatment and day programs include a traditional approach such as individual, group, and family psychotherapy. Our dietitians and exercise physiologists offer nutrition education, meal therapy, resting metabolic rate testing, exercise prescriptions, restaurant experientials, and cooking classes. In addition, adjunct therapy such as equine therapy, art and music therapy, retail therapy, and psychodrama are offered and the patient may design the adjunct program to meet their individual needs.

Treatment Model: I believe eating disorders are caused by multiple issues, so the treatment should reflect the individual's unique issues. I routinely refer to an experienced dietician and ask the client to provide information from their health care provider that they are physically safe. Some clients can benefit from psychiatric medications. Over my 20 years of specializing in ED's, I have created unique cognitive behavioral interventions that address the underlying issues of perfectionism, shame, and functioning in the extremes. I offer a free ED support group as well as individual and group therapies. I encourage participation in community anonymous meetings. I recently completed training with Thom Rutledge, coauthor of "Life Without ED." His approach (and mine) is caring, targets the ED voice in your head, and challenges you to take responsibility for change. As you heal mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically, you are then free to offer hope and healing to others!

Treatment Model: Eating disorders are not genuinely about food or weight. The thoughts and behaviors having to do with eating, weight, and body image are symptoms of underlying psychological issues which drive the eating disorder behavior. Consequently, treatment is aimed at resolving the underlying issues and replacing unhealthy coping skills (i.e., the eating disorder symptoms) with healthy ones. Insight-oriented psychotherapy along with cognitive-behavioral techniques and other scientifically supported interventions are used. This process must take place in a collaborative, caring environment in which the client feels free to identify, explore, and express all thoughts and feelings. An individualized, multidisciplinary approach is used that addresses the psychosocial, behavioral, and medical aspects of these complex illnesses.

Dr. Michel treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Dr. Michel has devoted her career to the study and treatment of eating disorders. She has presented nationally and internationally on anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, and obesity. Her publications include scientific articles, book chapters, and the popular book, "When Dieting Becomes Dangerous: A Guide to Understanding and Treating Anorexia and Bulimia." She also published a pioneering article on the treatment of selective eating (food neophobia) in adults. Prior to moving to The Woodlands, Dr. Michel was on the faculty of Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA where she was actively involved in clinical care, research, and teaching. She was also the director of the Tulane Health and Wellness Program, a weight management program focused on lifestyle change and health.
