Email: amy.epner@pyrysys.com
Treatment Model: Supporting ME uses the psychotherapy team, a model not found in any other eating disorder program. Supporting ME has a large staff of psychotherapists (mostly licensed psychologists), who provide many different types of psychotherapy. During early treatment, clients meet with members of this team so that they can determine with which therapists they work best. Clients then choose, in consultation with their clinical coordinator, the team of therapists (and types of therapy) which seem most helpful. These choices can be changed at any time, and frequently are, as clients pursue their own unique paths to recovery. Supporting ME staff also includes traditional medical professionals (physicians, dieticians) and alternative healers (providing acupuncture, bodywork, chakra therapy, shiatsu therapy, energy development and healing, etc.). The work of these providers is used to balance the work done in psychotherapy. When clients come to Supporting ME they do not need to know in advance which approaches to recovery they need to use. Together we determine the approaches clients need while they are here. The Supporting ME approach is entirely customized, more so than any other program. We work with client goals and values, to create treatment and aftercare plans that are precisely tailored for each individual. We focus in particular on identifying and resolving the problems that give rise to and maintain eating and body image problems (“co-morbidity”). Groups are available but not required. For local clients, services can be scheduled conveniently. When you call us, be prepared to think about eating disorder treatment in a brand new way!
Supporting ME treats Anorexia and Bulimia in males and females, adolescents and adults. Supporting ME also works with Athletes, Compulsive Exercisers, Compulsive Overeaters, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

If you don't have this connection, I urge you to talk to your therapist and if there is no improvement, move on to a therapist you can connect with. Mental illness is not viewed as an isolated event. Illness has multiple
influencing factors, which generally include genetics, personality traits,
relationships, social and cultural influences, and life experiences. Therefore,
my treatment is not focused on searching exclusively for the cause of the
problem but instead prioritizes helping the client find the solution. Treatment
planning is done collaboratively in that the client and I work together to
outline the goals of treatment. Metaphors, systems theory, family therapy, and
mindfulness are all incorporated into treatment and helping the client reach his
or her goals.

"The UCSD Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Program offers a full range of treatment options for teens and adults with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Each individual receives a comprehensive evaluation that determines their individualized treatment plan. As a university-based program, we provide state of the art treatments based on research and new understandings of eating disorders. Genetic vulnerabilities to anxiety, obsessive and perfectionistic traits predispose individuals to develop eating disorders. These traits can be modified through new coping strategies, to allow these traits to become assets rather than liabilities. Our adult programs primarily use the evidence-based approaches of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBT is a therapeutic approach that is designed to help individuals identify and challenge thoughts that contribute to anxiety, depression, and eating disorder symptoms. DBT is a non-judgmental therapeutic approach that balances acceptance with teaching skills for managing dysregulated emotions that can trigger eating disorder symptoms. Our adolescent programs are based on a Family Based Treatment (FBT) approach (also known as the Maudsley Model). In this treatment approach, training families to be integrally involved in helping their child recover from an eating disorder is the backbone of treatment, and we also teach the child skills to regulate their emotions and challenge eating disordered thoughts."
The staff consists of experienced professionals who are located on-site and specialize in eating disorder treatment. Disciplines represented include psychiatrists, psychologists, psychologist interns, psychiatric residents, and registered dietitians.

Treatment Model: At the Eating Disorder Center of San Diego, we utilize a comprehensive, three tiered approach that addresses each phase of eating disorder recovery. First, we address food and body image behaviors that impair day to day life functioning. Second, we help clients resolve underlying factors that contributed to the onset of the disease. Finally, we assist clients in forming their personal identity, which allows for purposeful living and leaves NO room for the eating disorder to resurface. Our healing model has a strong emphasis on experiential work and “outside the box” techniques that invite you to engage healing and make discoveries you didn’t think possible. Additionally, we customize treatment to your particular needs and readiness level, beginning where you are today, not where you or others think you should be. We don’t believe in placing you in an already set program, as many facilities often do, requiring you to conform to the treatment offered. Rather, at the Eating Disorder Center of San Diego, we partner with you; we foster your active participation in achieving recovery and directing your life. We have both individual and group sessions specifically for adolescents, as well as adults.
Programs include: Expressive Arts; Mindfulness Training; Emotional Healing; Body Movement Awareness; Licensed, Experienced Clinicians (versus interns in training); Peer Support from Graduates in recovery for over two years; Group and Individual sessions; Financial Support and Advocacy; Flexible Scheduling; Family Support; Referral Support and Case Management; Aftercare and Maintenance; “Outside the box” methods that move beyond the limits of talk therapy; Experiential, holistic, and body-centered modalities that opens doors into the unconscious; Customized programming that starts where you are versus joining a predetermined set of groups.
The Eating Disorder Center of San Diego treats Anorexia and Bulimia in adult and adolescent men and women. They also work with Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
