Drawing from my training at the Women’s Therapy Centre Institute in NYC, I approach the treatment of eating disorders from a cultural-relational psychodynamic orientation. Most notably, I envision clients’ relationships with food and their bodies as metaphors for their relationships with themselves and the world. In other words, the desire for and rejection of the "forbidden food" represents the client’s unspoken relational needs (e.g., love, dependency, authentic connection) and feelings (e.g., anger, sadness, jealousy). In turn, healing from an eating disorder requires learning how to identify, experience, and express these "forbidden" needs and feelings. For the client, this process occurs through building a safe and trusting relationship with the therapist. Additionally, I consider the cultural messages about gender as injurious to both men and women. Thus, healing also includes developing the ability to critique the cultural imperatives for a specific body size and weight. Finally, I recognize that a major part of healing from an eating disorder is learning to eat "in-sync" with one’s bodily needs and hunger cycles. This often requires more cognitive-behaviorally oriented interventions aimed at teaching clients how to relate to their body in a healthy manner. For example, CBT interventions may be used to help a client recognize his or her physical hunger or use supportive self-talk when integrating a "forbidden" food into one’s eating patterns. I graduated from the One Year Post Graduate Training Program - Eating and the Body: A Cultural, Relational Psychoanalytic Framework at the Women's Therapy Centre Institute in NYC in 2005.

Treatment Model: I am a Psychotherapist, Registered Dietitian and Exercise Physiologist. I use an Eclectic Approach – including Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Humanistic Existential, Jungian, Narrative, Feminist Family Systems - and a Non-Diet Approach for Nutrition Therapy. This may include a variety of psychological theories and techniques, social, spiritual and environmental circumstances that affect the mind/body connection – across a broad range of client needs. I also provide Christian counseling, when requested. I work with many clients dealing with body image distortions and disordered eating patterns/issues. Regardless of age or family situation, I see individuals with a broad range of physiological, psychological, and/or sociocultural concerns that separate them from a healthy, integrated relationship (involving mind, body, food, and movement) with themselves and with others. In the end, my goal for all clients is that they will allow themselves to become more consistently aware and accepting of who they are the moment and – from that position – decide on ways to change (or stay the same). Throughout the process, I believe that a positive and supportive counseling relationship and counseling style (incorporating motivational interviewing and a focus on positive changes) are important aspects of therapeutic effectiveness.

Ms. Travali treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, infants, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Food Addiction, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Night Eating Syndrome and Pica.

Treatment Model: My approach is eclectic. After 20 years of treating anorexia and bulimia, I use what approaches seem to fit the needs of the client. Some clients do better with CBT and DBT skills, whereas others may benefit from a less cognitive approach. I also provide educational information about starvation, refeeding, physiological changes/needs...etc and collaborate with an RD. Spirituality is also an important ingredient for growth.
Ms. Heim treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
Treating Eating Disorders Since the Year: 1987

Most people who have been prisoner of an eating disorder or family member(s) want "to get rid of it (the eating disorder)." My approach helps clients to nurture the eating disordered self rather than "to fight it. Clients can begin to understand the underpinnings of the eating disorder's driving force in their life. I find cognitive-behavioral therapy is not sufficient treatment modality to help eating disorder clients recover. My perspective is hard to explain in a soundbite!
