I believe people heal through connection, and I provide a safe environment where a client can experience new ways of coping, relating, and resolving conflict. I promote growth by witnessing the client's story and providing feedback including strengths and progress as well as the causes of the client's pain, often childhood traumas. I am certified in addictions counseling as well as being a licensed psychologist, and often see people struggle with both eating disorders and other addictions. I am experienced in helping people address all addictive behaviors as well as eating disorders. I do not see eating disorders as addictions and I use a non-diet approach. In addition to the relational work, I may offer some cognitive exercises and challenges, EMDR, sand tray therapy and hypnosis. I am a clinical psychologist who has worked for over 25 years with individuals struggling with eating disorders. I have offered therapy in inpatient, outpatient, residential and private practice settings, conducted research, and provided supervision and training. Over this time, I have come to recognize that a collaborative, relational and team-based approach is optimal, and that while past experiences need to be addressed, the individual's current behaviors, lifestyle, and family situation are just as critical. The goal of therapy is not just the elimination of symptoms, but rather, to improve the individual's overall sense of self-acceptance and wellness.

Treatment Model: I take an eclectic approach to treating eating disorders which includes: Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioral, and Family Systems. Therapy needs to take the individual into consideration and I try to meet the client where they are at in terms of their willingness to recover from their eating disorder. The most important thing for me is making the client feel comfortable in wanting to return to therapy so we can work together in helping him or her recover from their eating disorder. I believe in working with other eating disorder professionals in order to provide my client with comprehensive eating disorder treatment.

Dr. Edwards-Hawver treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Payment Options: Cash/Check, Insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, Sliding Scale

I have been recovered from anorexia nervosa for over 20 years and understand the difficulty and complexity involved in overcoming an eating disorder. I ended up having heart surgery three times due to years of laxative abuse, which was the catalyst in obtaining my doctoral degree so I could help others who suffer from eating disorders.

My training in Energy Psychology allows me to bring to the therapy session an extraordinary and powerful tool to complement my psychodynamic practice. The foundations of Energy Psychology are by no means novel or experimental but are rooted in the 5,000 year-old traditions of ancient Chinese medicine. The effective use of these traditions in the treatment of various psychological disorders is new. As a practitioner, I have completed specialized didactic and clinical training through the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP) so that I may include energy work for those clients who are interested in exploring the benefits of including this novel approach to treating psychological issues, including eating disorders (I am currently working towards certification.)

Treatment Model: I am a Psychotherapist, Registered Dietitian and Exercise Physiologist. I use an Eclectic Approach – including Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Humanistic Existential, Jungian, Narrative, Feminist Family Systems - and a Non-Diet Approach for Nutrition Therapy. This may include a variety of psychological theories and techniques, social, spiritual and environmental circumstances that affect the mind/body connection – across a broad range of client needs. I also provide Christian counseling, when requested. I work with many clients dealing with body image distortions and disordered eating patterns/issues. Regardless of age or family situation, I see individuals with a broad range of physiological, psychological, and/or sociocultural concerns that separate them from a healthy, integrated relationship (involving mind, body, food, and movement) with themselves and with others. In the end, my goal for all clients is that they will allow themselves to become more consistently aware and accepting of who they are the moment and – from that position – decide on ways to change (or stay the same). Throughout the process, I believe that a positive and supportive counseling relationship and counseling style (incorporating motivational interviewing and a focus on positive changes) are important aspects of therapeutic effectiveness.

Treatment Model: My approach is eclectic. After 20 years of treating anorexia and bulimia, I use what approaches seem to fit the needs of the client. Some clients do better with CBT and DBT skills, whereas others may benefit from a less cognitive approach. I also provide educational information about starvation, refeeding, physiological changes/needs...etc and collaborate with an RD. Spirituality is also an important ingredient for growth.

Most people who have been prisoner of an eating disorder or family member(s) want "to get rid of it (the eating disorder)." My approach helps clients to nurture the eating disordered self rather than "to fight it. Clients can begin to understand the underpinnings of the eating disorder's driving force in their life. I find cognitive-behavioral therapy is not sufficient treatment modality to help eating disorder clients recover.
