She has a masters degree in counseling psychology, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (California), Licensed Professional Counselor (Oregon) and is a Certified Somatic Experiencing (S.E.) Practitioner. She has been fortunate to have studied with the founder of S.E., Dr. Peter Levine, an international speaker and author.

As a mind and body psychotherapist, Ms. Love combines Cognitive-Behavioral "talk" therapy with Somatic Experiencing "body-orientated" therapy. Ms. Love incorporates S.E. into her approach because she finds that some of her clients’ symptoms can not be fully addressed with "talk" therapy alone. With her comprehensive mind-body approach, her clients report a renewed sense of self and increased hope about the future and the possibilities that lie ahead.  Ms. Love has spent several years working with eating disorder clients. She has found that a comprehensive mind and body approach gives clients the greatest hope of a full recovery. Typical eating disorder treatment is addressed from a cognitive approach. Ms. Love’s approach deals with the cognitive issues, but also the physiological issues. Typical physiological issues include an inability for the nervous system to self regulate and therefore make it extremely difficult for the eating disorder client to manage their anxiety and depression. Ms. Love’s mind and body approach, combined with her personal insights about what it took to recover after a 20 year battle with anorexia and bulimia, make her an ideal therapist for anyone struggling with an eating disorder. In addition, Ms. Love, a former long distance runner who competed at both the National and Olympic level, has a special interest in working with athletes, especially those struggling with eating disorders (dancers, gymnasts and long-distance runners).

Support Group: Mind and Body Integration also offers an Eating Disorder group for women ages 21-45 struggling with eating disorders. The group is led by Kathleen Love, Licensed Professional Counselor. The group meets from 5:30-6:20pm. Location is: 8020 SW Cirrus Drive, Beaverton, OR. Cost per group: $25 ($10 for clients of Mind and Body Integration). Please call in advance if you would like to attend; phone: 503-807-2704.

"Eating and exercise disorders are progressive and debilitating illnesses requiring medical, nutritional and psychological intervention. Individuals suffering from these disorders often need a structured environment to achieve recovery. However, all too often a person does well in a highly structured, regimented environment only to fall into relapse upon returning to a less structured situation. Our residential programs for anorexia treatment, bulimia treatment and exercise addiction treatment are designed to meet the individual needs of clients and their families in a way that gives them an increasingly higher level of responsibility and "teaches" them how to recover and sustain it. The atmosphere at Monte Nido and its affiliate programs, is professional and structured, but it is also warm, friendly, and family-like. We use highly dedicated staff members, many of whom are recovered themselves, thus serving as excellent role models. Our philosophy and environment inspires people to commit to overcoming obstacles that are interfering with the quality of their lives. "

Kartini Clinic for Disordered Eating

Director: Dr. Julie K. OToole MD, MPH

Inpatient, Medical Evaluation, Day Treatment, College/University Counseling Program, Nutritional Counseling, Holistic Healing, Hypnosis, EMDR, Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Support Groups, Private Practice/Individual Counseling, Intensive Outpatient for Children, Adolescents and Young Adults

2800 N. Vancouver, Suite 118, Portland, OR

Office: 503-249-8851

Website: www.kartiniclinic.com

Email: help@kartiniclinic.com

Treatment Model: Our facility has been in existence for almost 12 years now. Our basic philosophy is that Eating Disorders have some genetic component (eliminating placing blame on parents & patients). With this we provide an environment where the child and parents are involved in treatment and recovery. Parents are critical in helping the younger patient let go of food, calories and any responsibility associated with food and preparation. Thereby allowing the child/adolescent freedom to focus on all the other aspects of their lives. Of course this is different for our college-age kids who learn through steps to gain back their independent living skills.

Kartini Clinic also treats Anorexia and Bulimia; children, adolescents and young adults (age range 6-22 years of age) in a normal outpatient setting. They also treat Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Athletes, Compulsive Exercisers, Night Eating Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Treating Eating Disorders Since the Year: 1998

Payment Options: Cash/Check, Insurance, Credit Cards

Kartini Clinic was established in June of 1998, to serve the children and adolescents, ages 6-21, male and female, of the Pacific Northwest who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorders, as well as those whose disordered eating contributes to obesity or wasting conditions. At Kartini Clinic they take a biopsychosocial approach to the eating disorders of children and young adults, with a strong medical component and emphasis on prompt, adequate weight restoration as a prerequisite to normal growth and development. They work closely with other pediatric sub-specialists to provide up-to-date care for these conditions, and require our patients to have a primary care doctor with whom we will work closely to assure continuity of care. They provide medical stabilization, day treatment (aka partial hospitalization), and outpatient follow-up.

Miranda May, MA, Registered LPC Intern

Individual Therapy/Private Practice

3615 NE Grand Avenue, Portland, OR

Office: 503-281-1166

Website: www.owlsnestnorth.com

Email: miranda@owlsnestnorth.com

Treatment Model: An individual's pattern of eating and relationship to their body are too unique to subscribe to approaches that simplify these complex issues down to one-liners such as "eating disorders are about control." If you've ever thought, "my eating and body image issues don't seem to look like the ones addressed in the popular media", don't give up hope that assistance is available for what you are experiencing. A chosen theory/therapy approach speaks to what a professional believes makes us human, and what in that human's life has gone awry that should be addressed by that professional. Ms. May uses the biopsychosocial model, with a strong focus on the psychosocial. To pay attention to the social when it comes to disordered eating is to accept and work with the fact that each of our environments actually encourage disordered eating in various ways and to varying degrees. Becoming aware of these factors can itself be therapeutic. However, it is necessary to move beyond addressing societal factors to exploring the psychological processes that made you vulnerable to this social ill. To this aim Ms. May uses elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, and Rational Emotive Therapy with Emotionally Focused Interventions. She completed Lewis and Clark College's 128 hour Eating Disorder Certification in 2008.

Ms. May treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Bariatric Surgery Assistance and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

You did not cause your eating disorder, but you can choose to heal yourself with appropriate help and support.  An eating disorder is a complex, progressive condition that, over time, affects all aspects of a person's life. You many not realize it now, but your eating disorder is giving you an opportunity to take charge of your health and your life, present and future.
