I know how frustrating, shaming and lonely it feels to deal with emotional and compulsive overeating. Each day can begin with hope and end up with depression and despair. My approach to overcoming this exhausting and painful cycle is a combination of cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, relational tools fostered in a safe and accepting environment. I help my clients learn about themselves and what causes them to eat in ways that are harmful to their spirit and body and replace these actions with self nurturing and intentional behaviors.

Depressed, anxious, problems in a relationship body image distortions. These are some of the issues that people bring into therapy. As I see it, therapy needs to provide a non-judgmental, accepting and supportive space to work on the problems one faces. I strive to treat each person as a unique individual, helping them to direct the treatment that will move them beyond the problems that they are now facing to a life that is hopefully more fulfilling and less painful. It is my aim to help each individual to deal with the issues that are affecting them and causing them the emotional pain that has lead them to seek psychotherapy. I seek to truly listen to each person, to deal with them with respect and work with them as the unique individual that they are. No two people are the same and I do not provide a cookie cutter approach to the work that I do. Each person has his or her own needs, pains, strengths and issues that need addressing. Patients have described me as 'caring, nurturing, gentle, and direct' as a therapist. Through psychotherapy, we can help make sense of what is feeling wrong, relieve your anxiety and depression, heal wounds, sadness and anger from relationships, grieve losses, and help you improve your self-esteem and regain your ability for closeness and intimacy. I specialize in working with adults with depression or anxiety and difficulties in relationships and with children and adolescents with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, ADD/ADHD and behavioral difficulties. Too often the focus is exclusively on the symptoms and the underlying problems are ignored. In that situation, problems will resurface in a short time, as the causes for the difficulties have not been dealt with. While the symptoms obviously have to be addressed, I believe that all too often the causes for the difficulties are not addressed in short-term highly structured therapy. Psychotherapy needs to look at causes and not simply the overt symptoms. During the 30 years that I have been in practice I have worked with individuals with a wide variety of difficulties. The issues have ranged from depression and anxiety to difficulties in relationships with spouses, friends, and children/parents. I have worked with suicidal individuals and with those facing crises in their home or work situations. I work with children and adolescents with a wide variety of difficulties from ADD/ADHD to eating disorders, oppositional behavior, depression and drug problems. As well I have specialized in treating individuals who suffer from PTSD, and histories of sexual and/or physical abuse. In other words, I work with the variety of problems that people develop as they live, work, grow and develop in our society.

The Medical Center treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents and adults.

The goal of the Eating Disorders Program at University Medical Center at Princeton is to promote the physical and emotional recovery of each patient in an atmosphere of acceptance and support. The program's location in a full-service medical center allows for thorough and efficient treatment of any medical complications while simultaneously addressing the psychological issues underlying the eating disorder.  The multidisciplinary treatment team is headed by Medical Director Russell Marx, M.D., a board certified psychiatrist.  Dr. Marx is a nationally known clinician and author of It's Not Your Fault: Overcoming Anorexia and Bulimia.  He is joined by Kenneth Willis, M.D., a board certified psychiatrist who served as the program's first medical director, and Melinda Parisi, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist with extensive expertise in eating disorders and women's issues.  Treatment at UMCP emphasizes care for the whole patient, as eating disorders are illnesses that affect the individual physically, emotionally and socially.  The program combines a psychosocial approach with the latest advances in nutritional and medical treatment. Though intensive therapy, patients begin to identify underlying issues contributing to disordered eating and distorted body image. Each patient's condition and needs are evaluated individually, and a treatment plan based on this evaluation is designed to facilitate full recovery.  The program offers inpatient and partial hospitalization.  The level of care and length of stay are individualized according to each patient's needs.  For more information, visit the website or call 609-497-4490 (Toll Free: 877-932-8935).

She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Night Eating Syndrome, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Treatment Philosophy: Involves creating a safe, compassionate, and supportive environment in which to begin the process of healing. The work focuses on one's relationship with food and body. Cognitive-behavioral techniques (i.e., food-mood diaries; bibliotherapy; relaxation techniques; journaling; identifying hunger and satiation; etc.) are used to address and reduce eating disorder symptoms while simultaneously exploring the underlying issues (i.e., psychological; cultural; familial; interpersonal; etc.) which initially led to the creation of, and currently maintain the symptoms. Through this two-pronged approach symptom reduction occurs and healthier coping skills are developed. An increase in self-awareness and understanding leads to self-acceptance, self-love, and self-care. Referrals to and collaboration with physicians, psychiatrists, and/or nutritionists are available.

Both programs are under the direction of Michael Pertschuk, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, nationally recognized for his expertise in the field of eating disorders, and named Philadelphia Magazine's 'Top Doc for Eating Disorders.' Our programs run three to four days per week, late afternoon through early evening hours allowing patients to continue with school and/or work during the day. We have designed our treatment centers to be homelike and friendly, and our programs are small--a typical group rarely has more than 10 participants. Our treatment is collaborative involving the combined efforts of the individual, family and staff working together in a context of mutual respect. And while we believe that treatment is serious business, serious does not mean grim. Warmth, humor, and a sense of caring are as important to the treatment process as any specific psychotherapy. Treatment Model: Dr. Winbury's treatment model is Psychodynamic/Self-Psychology with Cognitive Behavioral interventions where appropriate.  Her focus is on both symptom relief and the underlying causes of the eating disorder, and support of the development of a true self and identity.  Working together we try to understand and set meaningful goals. In addition to symptom relief together with my patients, I help an individual (or couple)  develop a sense of self and life which is satisfying and works. I work with physicians and nutritionists as appropriate.

Dr. Winbury treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating.
