Treatment Model: With more than a decade of experience working with individuals
of all ages with eating disorders and other self-harming behaviors such as
cutting and substance abuse, Dr. Bergstein brings the combination of extensive
training and experience to very individualized treatment of individuals
suffering from eating disorders. Dr. Bergstein also often works in a team model
enlisting nutritional and medical interventions when appropriate. Whether trying
to break free from the compulsivity of an eating disorder (whether anorexia,

between one's eating disorder and other experiences such as substance abuse,
cutting, anxiety, depression, or sexual or gender-identity issues, Dr.
Bergstein's help proceeds from a deep understanding perspective which promotes
self-motivation and change. Deep understanding often leads to owning the fear of
changing - sometimes even of relinquishing an eating disorder - but also the
dread that allowing "hope" for a better life can bring.
Dr. Bergstein treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children,
adolescents and adults. She also works with Athletes, Compulsive Exercisers,

The Medical Center treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents and adults.
The goal of the Eating Disorders Program at University Medical Center at Princeton is to promote the physical and emotional recovery of each patient in an atmosphere of acceptance and support. The program's location in a full-service medical center allows for thorough and efficient treatment of any medical complications while simultaneously addressing the psychological issues underlying the eating disorder. The multidisciplinary treatment team is headed by Medical Director Russell Marx, M.D., a board certified psychiatrist. Dr. Marx is a nationally known clinician and author of It's Not Your Fault: Overcoming Anorexia and Bulimia. He is joined by Kenneth Willis, M.D., a board certified psychiatrist who served as the program's first medical director, and Melinda Parisi, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist with extensive expertise in eating disorders and women's issues. Treatment at UMCP emphasizes care for the whole patient, as eating disorders are illnesses that affect the individual physically, emotionally and socially. The program combines a psychosocial approach with the latest advances in nutritional and medical treatment. Though intensive therapy, patients begin to identify underlying issues contributing to disordered eating and distorted body image. Each patient's condition and needs are evaluated individually, and a treatment plan based on this evaluation is designed to facilitate full recovery. The program offers inpatient and partial hospitalization. The level of care and length of stay are individualized according to each patient's needs. For more information, visit the website or call 609-497-4490 (Toll Free: 877-932-8935).

Both programs are under the direction of Michael Pertschuk, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, nationally recognized for his expertise in the field of eating disorders, and named Philadelphia Magazine's 'Top Doc for Eating Disorders.' Our programs run three to four days per week, late afternoon through early evening hours allowing patients to continue with school and/or work during the day. We have designed our treatment centers to be homelike and friendly, and our programs are small--a typical group rarely has more than 10 participants. Our treatment is collaborative involving the combined efforts of the individual, family and staff working together in a context of mutual respect. And while we believe that treatment is serious business, serious does not mean grim. Warmth, humor, and a sense of caring are as important to the treatment process as any specific psychotherapy. Treatment Model: After working in the mental health field for over thirty years and treating people with eating disorders for close to 25 years, I have come to appreciate the connection between mind and body and this guides me as I strive to guide my clients. I believe that self-awareness is the first step in solving life's problems and this includes an awareness of the physical as well as the emotional and spiritual parts of a person. I use meditation along with other techniques to help my clients develop the capacity to experience life in the present moment. I have found this approach to be particularly useful for clients suffering from eating disorders because it can help to reduce obsessive thoughts and fears about weight, appearance and food intake and to encourage a shift toward mindful or attuned eating, which is based on awareness of one's hunger/fullness signals as well as on one's wants, needs and desires.
