Treatment Model: I use an eclectic approach in providing therapy. After rapport is established the therapeutic model and/or treatment modality changes to adapt to the client - each session, depending on what issue they bring to the session. I have a Jungian approach which is helpful for those clients whose eating disorder is part of their identity, the way they tolerate frustration, and what they use to manage and make meaning out of stressful events in their life. Recovering from an Eating Disorder or disordered eating, weight or excessive exercise issues will take courage to face the issues they were facing and the eating disorder helped them control those issues without disrupting or disappointing others. Recovery will include psychodynamic therapy to assist them in their discovery of their true identity and cognitive-behavioral to change self/core-concepts. the focus is to learn healthy ways to relate to themselves and the world which aligns with who they feel is part of their true identity. I utilize individual therapy, didactics, art therapy, couple therapy, family therapy, and assignments that encourage the person to get past the mask of the eating disorder and reclaim their true self or sense-of-self.

For those who are in a severe struggle with an Eating Disorder or eating type issue and whose loved ones who desire they enter an Eating Disorder inpatient treatment program but the client does not feel it is necessary, Dr Brenneman also offers an intensive outpatient approach for 4 to 6 weeks, but this is only if they have had an initial evaluation with her and her team (including the physician trained in Eating Disorder treatment and the dietician) and if there is a consensus that the client is medically and emotionally stable enough to engage in the intensive outpatient approach for the initial 4 to 6 weeks. After that 4 to 6 weeks there will be a re-evaluation, which will include a re-evaluation to lessen the intensity (if progress if evident by each professional), to continue intensity for an additional 4 to 6 weeks, or to suggest intensive inpatient (if the client's psychological, emotional, and/or physical severity has increased) and assist in securing an intensive inpatient treatment program that fits specifically for that.
Dr. Brenneman provides a comprehensive approach to eating disorder recovery, which includes herself, a provisionally licensed psychologist, a physician and a dietitian/LMNT whose work is largely focused on helping individuals reach recovery. Studies have indicated that a comprehensive approach is most successful in aiding a person struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating and weight issues to reach full recovery. Depending on the severity of the disorder - at times we will suggest they engage in our intensive outpatient program - in which the individual is followed more closely by one or more of the team clinicians and we have titled this as an Intensive Outpatient Program. Additionally - in conjunction with the eating disorder or for others who do not have an eating issues - Dr. Brenneman also treats clients whom struggle with sexuality based on self perception to having been sexually assaulted or have a history of sexual abuse.
