Treatment Model:
Tapestry was developed to provide an affordable alternative to the high cost of
extended treatment for eating disorders. We utilize a community-based recovery
model that limits cost while providing a rich interweaving of resources.
Treatment modalities include: Insight-oriented and cognitive-behavioral
therapies, Equine Therapy, Nutritional Counseling, Expressive Arts groups
including movement and art therapy, Real-world grocery shopping and restaurant
practice, Healthy food preparation with Nutritionist, DBT Skills Groups, Yoga,
Massage, Trager, and EMDR. Tapestry's Philosophy is centered around putting recovery into the control of the client while providing support, skills training, and education by staff. We do not lock the doors to the kitchen or follow our clients to the restroom. We work our clients to gain their trust so they are able to share with staff when urges to binge/purge/restrict arise. This assists in allowing the client and staff to identify triggers while in treatment, rather than be shielded from them and relapse when faced with those triggers after discharge. Our highly skilled staff are here to support and provide guidance throughout every aspect of treatment. Our Nutritionist works with each client on an Individual Basis to provide meal planning, nutrition education, cooking meals, and grocery shopping. A major part of our program is centered around the client learning to shop for and prepare meals that meet their nutritional needs. An individual meal plan is prepared for Breakfast and Lunch. A group meal plan is prepared for Dinner with the group coming together once a week to plan their meals that will meet each clients nutritional needs. We prepare the client to be able to grocery shop and prepare their meals for themselves and family and meet nutritional needs following discharge. It is our goal to assist our clients to gain all skills necessary to maintain recovery throughout the rest of their lives. We work with women who are actively seeking treatment and want to engage in a recovery program. For additional information, visit www.tapestrync.com or call Tina Nowak at 828-384-1654.

I view therapy as a collaborative effort between therapist and client. I serve as a guide who knows the terrain of the eating-disordered world, but each client is a unique individual whose path of recovery is specific to them. I endeavor to make therapy a safe place for clients to speak openly, to be vulnerable, to share the things that are hard to let others see or know. I respect the inner wisdom of each client. And I help my clients distinguish between the voice of the eating disorder and that of their true, core selves. I offer two therapy groups for women with eating and body image concerns: an anorexia/bulimia group for women dealing with restricting/bingeing/purging/compulsive exercise, and an overeaters group for women who eat compulsively/binge eat. There is magic in relating to others who share our struggles. Isolation and shame melt away, and group members have fellow travelers on the journey of recovery.

My intern, Kathleen Hamby, M.A., LMFTA, has completed her graduate studies and is accruing hours toward licensure. She is also pursuing Eating Disorders Specialist certification under my supervision. Treatment Model: I have been trained and practice in an integrative therapeutic style, tailoring sessions to each individual client’s unique needs. I tend to implement experiential, brief dynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused techniques, with a focus on the therapeutic relationship. A combination of these techniques helps guide the client to immediate symptom relief, as well as provides the opportunity for exploration of deeper meaning through taking a look at early life experiences, patterns and behaviors. My work focuses on the mind-body connection, and thus a portion of my initial session with a client will focus on “the basics” such as sleep and eating habits, exercise, and general self-care. I also enjoy weaving my love of visual arts into my therapy work when appropriate, and as such can provide art therapy using various modalities to include drawing and painting. I have specialized training in assessment, and am able to conduct eating disorder assessments as part of my practice as well.

Treatment Model: We believe that in order to achieve weight loss goals and keep the weight off you must change the way you think about nutrition, exercise and the role food plays in your life. Clients in treatment are examining their thoughts and feelings, past and present, about the role that food plays in their lives. Clients learn how to use self monitoring to break through denial and become conscious of their behaviors and how these behaviors effect their overall health and well-being. Emphasis is not on weight but on behavioral change and proper nutrition. One of the main goals of the program is to teach all clients to empower themselves and be successful after leaving our program.
