Dr. Ackard is licensed psychologist in private practice who has been dedicated to the treatment and understanding of eating disturbances for over 15 years, and takes a collaborative approach to treatment in which both the client and the psychologist work together to develop treatment goals and discuss strategies to achieve these goals. She is a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders and is recognized by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. She has specializations in the research and treatment of eating disturbances, and who holds positions as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN and as Research Scientist at the Eating Disorders Institute at Methodist Hospital, St Louis Park, MN. Treatment Model: Kathy's outpatient treatment approach combines ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, education, and family systems models. She uses a non-dieting approach with all patients and ascribes to Health at Every Size (HAES) principles. In addition, most clients are followed by one of several dieticians with whom she works closely, and referred for medication management when indicated. Patients are assessed and referred for the level of care that is needed to interrupt their eating disorder symptoms. This may include outpatient psychotherapy with Kathy 1-2 times per week, or referral to a partial or full hospital program. Patients may also be referred for group therapy as an adjunct to their individual therapy with Kathy.
As a treatment provider for over 30 years, Kathy is also active in primary prevention. In association with the National Eating Disorder Association Kathy has published three editions of her Healthy Bodies; Teaching Kids What They Need to Know curriculum for upper elementary school children. The National Eating Disorder Association published her Healthy Body Image: Teaching Kids to Eat and Love Their Bodies Too! curriculum in 1998.
