The development of eating disordered behaviors typically occurs out of an attempt to cope with stress, a difficult relationship, or some negative experience or emotion. It's a process to develop an eating disorder, and it's a process to learn a different way of coping. This means it will take some time, so I work with clients not only to reduce their symptoms, but also to find healthier ways of coping with stress, anxiety, or other negative feeling states.

Treatment Model: I believe that each person suffering with an eating disorder or body image issues can get better and live a fulfilling life. Good psychotherapy depends on a good working relationship between therapist and patient. Because research has demonstrated that this relationship is the strongest predictor of therapeutic success, we will want to make sure that it feels like a "good fit." With this as a foundation, I will work with you to develop a treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs and experiences. To do this, I will draw on a strong research and clinical background. I am very comfortable working with a team, so if it seems like it would be helpful for you, I am happy to offer referrals to skilled psychiatrists, art therapists, nutritionists, and medical doctors who have experience working with eating disorders. You do not have to do this alone!

Dr. Rubenstein treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Bariatric Surgery Assistance, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Night Eating Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

My education and training include doctoral and postdoctoral work. I earned my PhD at The American University where I received specialized training in individual and group interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapy. At Georgetown University’s Medical Center, I learned to do individual and group therapy with children and adolescents suffering from anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, and obesity. As a Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health I worked with a team of psychiatrists and psychologists doing research on the treatment of eating disorders. I also did a two year post-doctoral program at the Washington School of Psychiatry in which a small group of psychotherapists read about and participated in seminars on psychodynamic, interpersonal, object-relations, family systems, and group theory and applied this to clinical work with individuals, couples, families, and groups.

Treatment Model: Eating disorders are caused by many different factors, and the origins of an individual's eating disorder are unique and personal. Eating disorder symptoms, like any other psychiatric symptoms, are a person's ways of coping with extremely difficult life circumstances. My therapeutic goal is to help patients uncover and understand the roots of their eating disorders and develop strategies to overcome them. By understanding the meaning or purpose that the eating disorder serves in patients' lives, whether it is to provide self-comfort or control or to communicate anger or neediness, I help them to find other, healthier, life-affirming ways of meeting those needs.

Dr. Gilbert treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Website: www.klionskytherapymetrodc.com/

Office: 301-718-8100

Treatment Model: My background is in Psychodynamic psychotherapy especially object relations and self-psychology. When individuals come to me for treatment, I believe it is necessary to use all of my experience and training to tailor my approach to what will be most helpful for them. This mean listening to the client's needs and incorporating methods that may work for them. While I work with a variety of individuals suffering from mild to relatively severe symptoms, those individuals requiring repeated hospitalization would be better served by a clinician affiliated with a clinic and/or hospital providing continuous coverage.

Dr. Klionsky treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Treating Eating Disorders Since the Year: 1996

Payment Options: Cash/Check, Sliding Scale

I seek to establish a collaborative, working relationship with clients. I believe it's important to listen to the needs of the individual and to recognize that each individual's treatment may be different. Most individuals come to me because their are scared, self-conscious, and feeling out of control. It is important to address painful symptoms but I believe that treatment should include psychotherapy (not just behavioral techniques) geared toward gaining insight into the development of eating disorder. By understanding their family background, developmental history, and environments in which they have lived, studied and worked, clients are able to understand how the eating disorder helped them cope with stressors including painful feelings. Through psychotherapy, clients examine the the fears associated with a healthier lifestyle and begin to see that lifestyle as more attractive and positive. Eating disorders (like all compulsive and self-destructive behavior) may, at times, mask underlying trauma. As a psychologist with many years of training and experience, trauma is part of my area of expertise.

Treatment Model: Establishing a warm, collaborative, and interactive therapeutic relationship is my first goal with every patient. I take a non-judgmental and empathic stance, helping patients explore the role that problematic eating behavior and symptoms plays in their lives, and exploring these behaviors as they relate to coping with feelings and life circumstances. Often a goal of treatment is to work through emotional issues driving the behavior, and to develop alternative ways to cope. Using an interpersonal and psychodynamic/object relations approach, combined with cognitive-behavioral techniques when indicated, I encourage patients to define individual treatment goals and needs. I work with medication consultants, nutritionists, and physicians in a team approach as needed.
