Walden Behavioral Care, LLC of Waltham, MA, is one of the country’s leading hospitals for treating eating disorders. Walden treats a variety of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, a psychological disorder characterized by an aversion to eating and fear of gaining weight; bulimia nervosa, a condition where sufferers typically purge food they have eaten by self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives or other means, and binge eating disorder, which is characterized by uncontrollable, excessive eating.

Walden, which opened in 2003 at the former Waltham Hospital (now known as Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham), developed a "whole health" treatment approach. Walden is among only a few healthcare providers in the country to offer a full "continuum of care" for treating eating disorders. It provides in-patient care, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care at its Waltham facility, in addition to psychiatric care. Recognizing that many patients with eating disorders also have psychiatric disorders and vice versa, Walden treats co-occurring disorders concurrently. Walden treats each patient's medical needs, as well as providing behavioral therapy and nutritional programs. The Northampton facility is Walden's first satellite program, treating adults and adolescents as young as 13. Treatment programs include a partial hospitalization program, which provides care for six hours a day, five days a week for each patient; and intensive outpatient care, which provides care for three hours an evening for three evenings a week for each patient. Program staff in Northampton include a nutritionist, a psychiatrist, an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), social workers, mental-health counselors and an office manager.  For more information about our eating disorders treatment program in Northampton, call the Jennifer Smith at 413-582-0100 or send an email to jsmith@waldenbehavioralcare.com.

Treatment Model: I use a combination of cognitive/behavioral and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches. Cognitive/behavioral approaches focus on understanding the hidden or repetitive thought patterns that may maintain behaviors or suffering. IFS is a gentle exploration of the various parts of oneself that may at times seem unruly, out of character, or may provide motivation for unwanted behaviors. This is a collaborative and non-pathologizing form of therapy in which clients access an innate Self, a core of compassion and leadership qualities. Working from this core of compassion, the client brings balance, acceptance, and healing to parts of himself or herself that may have experienced shame, hurt or overwhelming emotions.

Dr. Weathers treats Anorexia and Bulimia in adult men and women. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Night Eating Syndrome, Compulsive Overeating and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

McLean Hospital's Klarman Eating Disorder Center treats anorexia and bulimia eating disorders, females, adolescents ages 13 to 23.

The Klarman Center is a comprehensive program in New England dedicated to treating the complex emotional, nutritional and educational needs of adolescent girls and young women with eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia), all in one clinical setting. The Center, which treats young women from ages 13 to 23, is housed in its own newly renovated building on the McLean grounds. The program offers a continuum of care - residential and partial hospitalization, with a referral network for outpatient care - enabling individuals to progress to less intensive levels of care as they become healthier. The same staff follows patients throughout the continuum. A program director and a medical director lead a highly trained, multidisciplinary treatment team including psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, a nutritionist, nurses and an expressive therapist. Tutoring and/or an academic classroom are available for patients up to grade 12. A key aspect of the Center is its behavioral approach and extensive resources to address psychiatric conditions, such as depression, anxiety, trauma and substance abuse, which generally underlie eating disorders. The goal is to not only stabilize the medical symptoms but also to address the root causes of the illness. The Klarman Eating Disorders Center was made possible with the generous donation of the Klarman Family Foundation, Chestnut Hill, MA. McLean Hospital is the largest psychiatric teaching facility of Harvard Medical School, an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of Partners HealthCare.

Special features of the Klarman Eating Disorder Center at McLean Hospital include: a long and distinguished history in providing psychiatric care, including the treatment of eating disorders; major research advances in better understanding and treating eating disorders; extensive resources to address coexisting conditions, such as substance abuse, depression, trauma-related disorders and other comorbid conditions; internal medicine services available. For further information or a prompt referral, call 617-855-3410. McLean Hospital accepts Medicare, Blue Cross and many other private health insurance and managed care plans.

The residential treatment program at Laurel Hill Inn focuses exclusively on adults, age 18 years and older suffering from anorexia or bulimia nervosa. The treatment model is focused on cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral skills training. Education and practice are key elements of our treatment program. Daily, there are skill-teaching groups that help the clients modify their eating disordered behaviors so that they may lead more productive & fulfilling lives. Clients receive individual, group, family therapy, and nutritional counseling. Experiential outings are incorporated into the treatment program in order for clients to practice the skills they are learning through real-life situations while on pass with family and supports.

The Day Treatment Program allows for intensive eating disorder treatment while an individual continues to live at home. In some cases, day treatment is often the appropriate next step following inpatient or residential treatment. This level of care provides structure, support and supervision for two meals and one snack a day. Additionally, a broad range of groups addressing psycho-education, DBT skills building, cognitive behavioral, body image, and healthy nutritional goals will be offered each day. Treatment is provided from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday. In order for clients to participate in this level of care, they need to be medically and psychiatrically stable and have an outpatient treatment team.

Evening treatment programming is ideal for clients who have commitments during the day but need more support than their outpatient treatment team can provide. This level of care provides structure for three evenings per week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday). Treatment is provided from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and includes a community dinner, three groups each evening and nutritional counseling. Clients participating in the evening program must be medically and psychiatrically stable, have an outpatient treatment team and have daytime structure such as employment, school, or volunteer work for at least three hours daily.

Laurel Hill Inn is accredited by JCAHO and is licensed by the Department of Mental Health in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Walden Behavioral Care treats anorexia, bulimia, food addiction, binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Walden treats athletes and compulsive exercisers; males and females; adolescents and adults.

Walden Behavioral Care has responded to the evolving knowledge of eating disorders by becoming one of the first hospitals in the country to offer the full “continuum of care” for treating eating disorders. Walden offers acute inpatient, residential, adult partial hospitalization, adult evening intensive outpatient, adolescent after school intensive outpatient treatment and programming specifically designed to treat binge and night eating.

For those with advanced eating disorders, 24-hour monitoring and nursing care are essential. Treatment at this level stabilizes the patient in preparation for intensive behavioral, medical, nutritional and psychological therapy. Walden is one of only a few hospitals in the country to offer acute inpatient care in a specialized, dedicated program. Inpatient care typically lasts for 2 weeks. As patients progress, they can continue their treatment in Walden’s residential, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient programs. For those who still need a structured, full-time program, Walden Place provides treatment in a comfortable, home-like setting. Partial hospitalization is offered 6 hours per day, 5 days per week and is the recommended treatment for those who are not quite ready to make the transition from fulltime hospital care to independent living. It includes a daily, structured program, but patients return home each evening. Finally, intensive outpatient care is offered 3 hours per evening and 3 evenings per week and is designed to help patients complete their readjustment and maintain healthy eating patterns. Patients move in both directions within Walden’s continuum of care. When more intensive care is need, it is available for them. As they gain control over their disorder, they move toward independent living. Because Walden provides a full range of treatment options, it can treat patients who are at any stage in their eating disorder. As a result, patients receive uninterrupted medical care as they advance toward lasting recovery. Walden’s eating disorders programs provide discrete, highly specialized treatment for patients 12 and older. Eating disorder treatment for adults and adolescents struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or non-specified eating disorders such as binge eating disorder, night eating syndrome, emotional eating or orthorexia. I also offer nutrition coaching for weight management, obesity, pre- and post bariatric surgery, as well as coaching for individuals with complicated medical or psychiatric histories. Related approaches are used for treating type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and metabolic syndrome.

Treatment Model: Nutrition coaching incorporates a thorough nutrition assessment which encompasses the client's personal goals, motivations and strengths, as well as their medical and psychosocial histories. The assessment is critical to the development of an individualized training program aimed at effecting lasting behavioral change. Improving nutrition is more than understanding food sources of critical nutrients. Developing a nutrition blueprint that reflects personal biochemical and physical characteristics gets at the essence of nutrigenomics, the study of how food and diet interact with specific genes to increase or decrease the risk of certain diseases. Nutrition therapy and coaching combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches applied to nutrition behavior as well as mindfulness practices which increase awareness and facilitate behavior change over time.

In treating individuals with eating disorders and eating addictions, I have witnessed the vicious cycle of out-of-control eating followed by shame and self-criticism. Of course the destructive eating patterns have little to do with food itself; the diet-based treatments that largely prevail in conventional wisdom often create or exacerbate disordered eating. Rather, gradual introduction to personal acceptance and permission to savor "forbidden" foods in a controlled environment lays the foundation for the change necessary to achieve lasting health and wellness.

I serve as the eating disorders resource professional for the Behavioral Health Nutrition (BHN) practice group of the American Dietetic Association.

Treatment Model: For most people, a holistic and integrated approach is necessary to support the very hard work of healing from an eating disorder. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (usually including homework or areas to think about in between our meetings), and Relational, Interpersonal Therapy. In many situations I prefer to include a nutritionist and a physician on the team. Having worked with many wonderful people over many years, I am very conscious of the fact that each person brings a different need, and each benefits from a little different style. I will always collaborate with you to determine the best way for us to work together.

Dr. Allen treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
