Treatment Model: While a majority of past research suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy is the best approach, the most recent research on the treatment of eating disorders suggests that a family centered approach is most effective. The newest research also suggests that the use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is extremely effective when it comes to individual treatment. Therefore, consistent with current research findings, we teach DBT skills throughout the program, and we believe that the client's family should be involved in the recovery process if at all possible.

The Anxiety & Stress Management Institute treats Anorexia and Bulimia in adolescent and adult women. The Anxiety & Stress Management Institute also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

I have worked in a variety of settings with people of all ages who are struggling with eating normally. I believe that eating disorders serve a coping function for individuals, especially when they have experienced stress and trauma. That is, while they are not the most healthy way to deal with emotions, memories, or reactions, they do make the individual feel better in the moment. I work from a strengths based approach, meaning that I seek to build on what the person is doing well, while at the same time increasing coping resources that ultimately will be substituted in place of the eating disorder. I want to help my clients feel better and be healthy for both the moment AND the long term. In working with a client, I work holistically, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. I work collaboratively with clients, and seek to be a resource to the family.

I seek to help clients integrate their own personal and spiritual beliefs into the counseling process. I would characterize my counseling as “spiritually sensitive” as I am aware of the centrality of body, mind, and soul. I am committed to, and hold as sacred, each client's perspective and prerogative follow their own inclination as they pursue their spirituality. My own spiritual journey is distinctly Christian as I have experienced Jesus as gentle and life giving. I have known Christ’s love to extend outside tradition, norm, and moral dictates. Healing has been found for me in a sort of homecoming of self-awareness in proper reference to the selfless love and acceptance of Christ. A spiritual perspective coupled with psychological understanding are a strength of my practice.

The Eating Disorders Program provides treatment for adolescent and adult women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders.  They integrate insight-oriented therapy, family systems model, and a cognitive-behavioral approach to address eating disorders in a comprehensive and individualized manner. A master's level registered dietitian develops an individualized food plan for each patient and attends meals with patients. Food focus groups, held after each meal, help patients stay connected with their feelings and manage any behavioral changes. The goal of treatment is to help patients stabilize body weight, develop healthy eating patterns, identify and begin to heal the emotional issues that trigger symptoms, and develop the coping skills needed to prevent relapse.
