I believe in looking at the identity of the person as a whole, that the eating disorder does not define who they are no matter how much it is on their minds. Looking at the whole person requires knowledge of their mental/emotional health, as well as their physical and nutritional health. I am an addictions specialist as well as a certified personal trainer and sports nutritionist; I studied these areas with great passion and interest because I value understanding these areas and feel each needs to be addressed in order for the individual to fully recover. Please visit my webpage at www.psychfitinc.com for more information about my philosophy and treatment approach.

The development of eating disordered behaviors typically occurs out of an attempt to cope with stress, a difficult relationship, or some negative experience or emotion. It's a process to develop an eating disorder, and it's a process to learn a different way of coping. This means it will take some time, so I work with clients not only to reduce their symptoms, but also to find healthier ways of coping with stress, anxiety, or other negative feeling states.

Office: 301-718-8100
Treatment Model: My approach is primarily psychodynamic (object relations and self psychology) in that I perceive eating disorders as attempts to cope with painful feelings or underlying issues ranging from sadness to trauma. Unfortunately, the individual's attempt to soothe, distract, and/or protect themselves through food has evolved into a self-destructive pattern. When treating individuals, I utilize psychodynamic treatment; but, I strive to incorporate a variety of models such as cognitive behavioral in order to create the treatment which will be most beneficial for each client.
Dr. Klionsky treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
Treating Eating Disorders Since the Year: 1996
Payment Options: Cash/Check, Sliding Scale
I seek to establish a collaborative, working relationship with each client. This means listening to the needs of the individual and recognizing that each client's treatment may be different. My initial focus in on supporting clients who may feel scared, ashamed, and out of control in addition to helping them reduce dysfunctional patterns of behavior. However, lasting improvement requires insight and internal change. Clients engaged in psychotherapy work hard. They develop an understanding of how their specific form of an eating disorder developed and how that disorder helps (or had helped) them deal with painful feelings Clients also examine the fears associated with a healthier lifestyle and move toward seeing self-care as attractive and positive. Eating disorders (like all compulsive and self-destructive behavior) may, at times, mask underlying trauma. As a licensed psychologist with many years of training and experience, trauma is part of my area of expertise. However, clients requiring repeating hospitalization and/or "on-call" services would be better served with a clinician associated with a clinic or hospital.
