“Finding life. . . beyond food and fear” is the heart of my therapeutic philosophy. Most of my clients live in fear around how much food they eat or do not eat. Their relationship with food has evolved into one of pain and hiding versus pleasure and health. I use a Gestalt approach which gives voice to a person’s conflicting two parts: The part wanting to hold onto the eating disorder and its benefits AND the part wanting to let go for permanent growth and healing. Clients ultimately can reach a place where they discover choice, freedom and inner peace.

www.drchristyweller.comTreatment Model: My practice is geared towards adults and adolescents who are struggling with body image concerns and eating issues, such as emotional eating, binge eating, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders often serve as coping tools for more serious and painful underlying issues. I work with clients to uncover these underlying issues, the various functions the eating disorder has served in their life, and the meaning of the disordered eating behaviors. Individuals who struggle with eating disorders tend to have difficulty tolerating painful feelings and use their relationship with food as a way to manage these feelings. I help clients explore healthy ways to cope with feeling out of control and with feelings of shame, sadness, and anger. I also work with people struggling with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and stress management.

Treatment Model: I believe there is hope in recovering from an eating disorder. The process of recovering from an eating disorder consists of 2 parts. The first part entails stopping the problematic behaviors, the second part entails dealing with the underlying issues that are fueling the problematic behaviors. This two part process is accomplished using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and psychodynamic therapy. Additionally, depending on the specific needs of the client, a treatment team can be constructed. The treatment team may consist of a dietician, physician, psychiatrist and/or an exercise physiologist.

Eating disorders feel powerful and overwhelming, and individuals with eating disorders often feel powerless to control their confusing eating behavior. Becoming empowered and realizing the unique individual you are, separate from your eating disorder, will positively change your experience. By enriching your experience of emotions, thoughts, behaviors and sensations, you will become more resourceful and your eating disorder can be eliminated.

In my work with eating disorders, I have found that other types of mental distress can be present and can be interacting with eating disorder symptoms. Often, the eating disorder and the other issues are linked and influence one another. As I believe that everything is connected, I also treat expanded areas such as anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse survivors, addiction, and family intervention. I believe true recovery is not found without looking at all aspects of a person and helping them deconstruct the factors that may have caused or are currently contributing to the eating disordered symptoms. I also work with couples and families and know that healing comes from the support of loved ones.

I view each client as a unique individual and I strive to learn about each person's strengths as well as their areas for growth. I take each client's hopes, goals, and needs into account when planning a treatment approach. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders, an evidence based treatment model in my work with clients. I will also implement Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal modes of therapy when appropriate. I believe that a treatment team is invaluable in working with individuals who struggle with eating disorders. Thus, I work closely with a team of nutritionists, dieticians, physicians, and psychiatrists.

I help my clients to let go of their eating disorder symptoms, while working to heal the deeper core issues that underlie the preoccupation with food and weight. My therapeutic style has been described as warm, caring, and gentle yet challenging. I understand that eating disorders do not occur in a vacuum, and I am able to help my clients with their co-occurring concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, and family/relational concerns. I have experience working in several treatment settings, including inpatient/residential, partial hospitalization, private practice, and university counseling centers.
