“Finding life. . . beyond food and fear” is the heart of my therapeutic philosophy. Most of my clients live in fear around how much food they eat or do not eat.  Their relationship with food has evolved into one of pain and hiding versus pleasure and health.  I use a Gestalt approach which gives voice to a person’s conflicting two parts:  The part wanting to hold onto the eating disorder and its benefits AND the part wanting to let go for permanent growth and healing.  Clients ultimately can reach a place where they discover choice, freedom and inner peace.

Adult Eating Disorder Group. Location: 7010 Broadway, Suite 205, Denver, CO. Mondays: 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Group facilitators: Julie Bonnell, MA, LPC, LAC and Gary Wareham, MA, LPC, LAC. To register call 303-430-6914.

Treatment Model: This is a deeply personal and effective mentorship program for sufferers that are ready to let go of their destructive thoughts and habits and embrace life. My understanding of eating disorders is both personal and professional and I combines these things to create a specialized program for every client. I work with the sufferer to garner understanding about trigger thoughts and situations and uses cognitive behavioral therapy to overcome unwanted behaviors. I believe that until the neurobiology behind specific eating disorders is better understood that causality is guesswork so should not be a fundamental part of treatment at this stage until research indicates a more through understanding. I believes that anorexia is disorder with a neurological basis and is a not a choice, for this reason there is no time when a sufferer is "ready" for treatment as such. Now is the time.

Treatment Model: I believe there is hope in recovering from an eating disorder. The process of recovering from an eating disorder consists of 2 parts. The first part entails stopping the problematic behaviors, the second part entails dealing with the underlying issues that are fueling the problematic behaviors. This two part process is accomplished using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and psychodynamic therapy. Additionally, depending on the specific needs of the client, a treatment team can be constructed. The treatment team may consist of a dietician, physician, psychiatrist and/or an exercise physiologist.

In my work with eating disorders, I have found that other types of mental distress can be present and can be interacting with eating disorder symptoms. Often, the eating disorder and the other issues are linked and influence one another. As I believe that everything is connected, I also treat expanded areas such as anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse survivors, addiction, and family intervention. I believe true recovery is not found without looking at all aspects of a person and helping them deconstruct the factors that may have caused or are currently contributing to the eating disordered symptoms. I also work with couples and families and know that healing comes from the support of loved ones. Contact me at kate@katedaiglecounseling.com or 720-340-1443 to schedule a FREE consultation.

Treatment Model: My overall philosophy in therapy is that I work with individuals first; and I treat difficulties with eating, body image distress and related symptoms as part of the overall person. I often find the women and men I work with are exquisitely sensitive and very bright, but for any number of reasons they have yet to overcome their diseases and the stronghold it can have on different aspects of their lives. I recognize many people come to treatment and do not want to change as well and because of this, I make efforts to honor wherever someone is in their process. I have worked in a number of different treatment settings (Children's Hospital CO, Eating Recovery Center), at a range of levels of care (inpatient, partial hospital, outpatient) and with various ages (childhood, adolescents, adults). All of these experiences have informed the compassion, patience and understanding I bring to individual, group and family sessions, and the belief that wellness and recovery, with its many definitions, can be realized.

Dr. Satir treats Anorexia and Bulimia; children, adolescents, and adult women. She also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Laxative Abuse, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Treating Eating Disorders since the Year: 2004

Payment Options: Cash/Check, Credit Cards, Sliding Scale, I currently do not subscribe to any insurance panels, mostly because I find it limiting in terms of providing the right type of treatment. I help all my clients, who are interested, with submitting claims for out of network reimbursement.

I'm particularly skilled and well-trained in evidence based approaches for eating disorders, including CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), and IPT (interpersonal therapy), and Maudsley/Family based treatment. In addition, I have experience treating individuals with co-occurring mood, substance use, and personality disorders using DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) and relational psychotherapy. Clients often describe me as deeply committed and very empathic while also challenging them to make difficult changes in their own ways. I feel fortunate that practicing psychotherapy is something I find meaningful, and that offers an opportunity to witness courage and resiliency on a regular basis.
