I have a warm, supportive, and caring approach to working with bulimia, anorexia, and "yo-yo" dieting. I work with women, men, adolescents, couples, children and families in individual and group therapy, combining the "talking cure" with individualized strategies to help you help yourself. Whether you binge and purge, restrict, or "yoyo" diet, I believe you are trying to help yourself "think" with your body. Together we'll get to the root of your eating disorder--what underlies, triggers, and perpetuates it--and help you find more nurturing ways of taking care of yourself. I look forward to hearing from you!
Dr. Alitta Kullman brings a warm, supportive, and caring approach to working with bulimia, anorexia, "yo-yo" dieting, compulsive eating, binge-eating disorder, and a variety of other eating issues. Her emphasis is on helping you understand the emotional issues that underlie, trigger, and perpetuate your (or your loved one's) eating disorder, and tailoring intervention strategies specifically to meet those individual needs. Dr. Kullman is the author of the journal article "The Perseverant Personality," a groundbreaking approach to understanding the underlying causes of eating disorders, and the upcoming book, "Hunger for Connection: Why Creative, Successful, and Educated People have Eating Disorders and What They Can Do About Them." Whether in Group or Individual therapy, Dr. Kullman will help you unravel the ways you are trying to help (not hurt!) yourself or others via your eating disorder, and help eliminate the shame associated with it. She works with men, women, couples, adolescents, and families, helping to find more nurturing ways to understand and care for YOU, the person who lives "inside" an eating disorder. She welcomes your contact!
Dr. Kullman is now offering three types of groups: 1) For adults and adolescents with eating disorders 2) For parents of children (of any age!) with eating disorders, who want to learn how to understand the thinking and reconnect with their loved ones 3) For therapists interested in learning new perspectives and treatment options for their eating disordered patients/clients. All groups are held in her office, in a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment.

Clients have often told me that it is clear that I have a passion for what I
do, as can be seen in the dynamics of the therapy session. I want to hear from
you and listen to you, and I don't shy away from giving feedback, without
judgment or blame. Therapy can often be a mirror in which you can see yourself
more clearly and that is an emotional process as truths of how we cope are
revealed. In our sessions we will look at areas where you feel stuck or hopeless
and uncover unrealized skills, offer up new possibilities for action, and
connect you to motivation to change.

Dr. Elliott's eclectic approach to therapy varies according to the needs of the client, and emphasizes a collaboration of psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and coaching/mentoring when appropriate. Working together from a relational approach, therapy will focus on how you to relate to others as well as to yourself. Dr. Elliott often finds that her Clients are incredibly gifted and interesting people, who have struggled with food or body image issues for a very long time. In an effort to deepen awareness and move through such struggles, therapy focuses on each Client's unresolved or unprocessed issues and conflicts (that he or she may not be consciously aware of) that may have caused or perpetuated the eating disorder. Through this exploration, therapy helps to look beneath the surface and link early family and peer experiences to current unwanted behaviors and experiences. While learning how to cope with your feelings directly related to food, eating, body image and weight, therapy is helpful in gaining control over your behaviors and symptoms, while also changing maladaptive patterns and facilitating your emotions. You will learn how to gain access to your “eating disorder self” (the part that is responsible for disordered eating behavior), integrate it back into your core self, putting the healthy self back into control. Dr. Elliott prefers to work with other health care providers in a multidisciplinary approach, where her patients can receive the very best care from providers that will help them to feel supported from a myriad of areas (nutrition/dietician, psychiatry, medical, etc.) This is done on a case by case basis as deemed necessary.

Being part of a family with an eating disorder history has perhaps provided
me with a unique understanding. Working at a community health center and at The
Victorian, a residential treatment center for women with eating disorders and
drug/alcohol addiction, increased my clinical knowledge and experience. I
believe recovery is a journey--usually slow, often frustrating, ultimately
rewarding. My role is to be a partner and a guide on this journey. It is a
journey of rediscovering your self--your interests, strengths, and desires. I
work for the moment when a client is able to emerge from the darkness of the
eating disorder and tell me, "I feel like I have gotten my life back."
I offer a FREE monthly support and educational group for families, friends, and partners of loved ones struggling with an eating disorder. The group is held the first Wednesday of the month, 6-7:30PM, at 1151 Dove Street, Suite 245, Newport Beach, CA 92660. We discuss topics such as communication, boundary-setting and facilitating recovery. Participants share feelings about the eating disorder and receive mutual support. Sponsored by ANAD.

Treatment
Model: I use a combination of therapeutic interventions to work with the
underlying issues and emotions behind the eating disorder behaviors. My approach
is mainly eclectic, incorporating, psychodynamic, family systems, cognitive
behavioral and interpersonal psychotherapy. I believe to treat eating disorders
we need to address factors in the emotional, behavioral and environmental
realms. As we increase awareness of how we utilize our relationship with food to
manage our feelings and emotions, we can begin to learn to separate our emotions
from food, working through the underlying issues and implementing healthy change
behaviors. I help individuals develop the strength to overcome this dangerous
illness through increasing insight, and providing support and accountability. I
work collaboratively with a treatment team of dieticians, psychiatrists, and
medical doctors to ensure my clients are receiving the highest level of care. I
believe that each client is unique and requires individual consideration.
Clients are partners in the recovery process and I value my therapeutic
relationship with them.
