Treatment Philosophy: Therapy works best if you feel understood and supported by your therapist. I have over thirteen years experience working with people with eating disorders and many of my clients have told me that they feel very comfortable confiding in me. I use a combination of therapy approaches, each tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual client. These include cognitive-behavioral techniques, psychodynamic therapy, relational approaches, psychoeducational methods and addiction models to help you stop the cycle of your eating disorder. I was formally trained in the treatment of eating disorders. I created and ran the eating disorders program at a major metropolitan hospital, and currently work with individuals, couples, family members and groups. I run a free Saturday support group. I work with people suffering from bulimia, anorexia, binge eating disorder, and food and body image issues as well as other problems that often exist along side an eating disorder such as depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol addictions, low self esteem, relationship issues, childhood trauma and abuse, and more. My office is two blocks from a Bart station, and my initial screening sessions are always FREE. I also have a sliding scale. Please call, email me, or check out my website to schedule your free appointment.

Treatment Model: I am a psychotherapist specializing for over 17 years in food, weight, body image and exercise issues for individual adults. I have a personal history of an eating disorder so my own recovery path has led to this as my life's work. Being a nutritional consultant as well, we work on the body level to re-nourish, re-stabilize, and reconnect you to your body. We address the feeling level - the depression, anxieties, self esteem issues, and the thinking level that keeps you trapped - obsessing about calories, carbs, the gym, focusing on being a certain size/shape, etc. Central to our work is empowerment - learning to find and use your voice, set healthy boundaries, improve self esteem in all areas and develop healthier coping skills. Our focus is to normalize eating and change your relationship to food and to your body in a supportive, positive and hopeful experience.

Treatment Model: It IS possible to recover from disordered eating (bingeing, compulsive eating, emotional eating, restricting, purging), re-image your body and find your voice!

My orientation is eclectic, integrating Imaginal Psychology with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Somatic, and Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) tools to recover from disordered eating. As DBT and CBT have the most evidence-based research on successfully treating eating disorders, I use these tools in my approach. In our work together, we will also work on identifying the ways your critical self-talk relates to your compulsive eating, restricting, bingeing, purging, addiction, blocked creativity, depression, anxiety, or codependence. Through compassionate mirroring, pragmatic cognitive behavioral tools, expressive arts, spiritual practice/mindfulness, listening to your body's wisdom, and developing support, you will learn how to strengthen your ability to be with uncomfortable emotions. We will also look at how your family of origin experience has affected your current relationships and what interpersonal tools you would like to keep and which interpersonal behaviors are no longer serving you. You will learn how to be both more present and fiercely compassionate with yourself, no longer needing to compulsively eat, binge, restrict, purge, or engage in other behaviors that block your growth in becoming a fuller human being.

The modalities I have been trained in include expressive arts (drawing, collage, writing, movement, sand tray dialogue, meditation) along with talk psychotherapy. With expressive arts, you are invited to not "be an artist" in the sense of critiquing what you make or who you are, but to explore what emotions you are experiencing, who you are in this moment, and who you want to become. It's not about making good art. It's about becoming more authentically who you are. I also encourage 12 step participation where appropriate.

Dr. Linda Shanti McCabe treats Anorexia and Bulimia; adult men and women. She also works with Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Laxative Abuse and Compulsive Overeating.

Treatment Model: Eating Disorders are an indication that something within oneself is misaligned. I work relationally, meaning we will be curious together about this misalignment and what is happening for you. I value safety, integrity, and depth in my practice.

I provide long term treatment options as many patients have found that short term therapies offer relief in just that, the short-term, but generally find symptoms returning time and time again. Patients have often found doing sessions multiple times per week to be helpful, though weekly therapy is certainly an option.

Treatment Model: I believe that there is a meaning and purpose to disordered eating and weight-related behaviors, and there is more to healing than simply stopping behaviors. I work with individuals and groups, females, males, and all ages with eating and weight issues across the spectrum, who want to heal with compassion, acceptance and recognition of their individuality, as a whole person, integrating body, mind, soul and spirit in their recovery process. I developed and tested in doctoral research project, a pioneering process called Decoding the Symbolic Meaning and Purpose in Disordered Eating and Weight-Related Behaviors, to assist clients in their own self-discovery of intuitive methods for sustainable change. I work with a Health At Every Size approach and offer a wide variety of modalities, including a unique method of Intuitive and Mindful Eating; nutritional therapy and functional nutrition; spiritual counseling; biofeedback; guided imagery; meditation; Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)-a transformative change processes; Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT); use of art and movement; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I believe in a comprehensive team approach to treatment, and I work with a holistic group from the Integrative Medical Clinic of Santa Rosa, The Body Positive Institute in Berkeley and The Body Positive Counseling Center in San Rafael, and other ED specialists in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing client case consultations and referrals to alternative adjunct services to assist in sustainable recovery and healing.

I am passionate in helping people fully recover from disordered eating, body-image and weight-related behaviors, as I struggled throughout my teen and young adult years with these issues and an undetected eating disorder. At that time, there were no treatment centers, no eating disorder professionals (that anybody I knew, including doctors, nutritionist and therapists, had heard of), nor words to convey my behaviors; it was an incredibly lonely, depressing, anxious and isolating time in my life, yet no one seemed to know this about me, even though all the signs were there. That was over 30 years ago, and shortly thereafter, began my healing process. I strongly believe that full recovery is possible with the right team of professionals, along with family and community support, but most importantly, from the inner resources that are already in place within the individual. I believe it is my task, as a clinician, to assist my clients in finding those inner resources and expressing their unique voice, and developing the skills and practices to care deeply for themselves in not only their physical and emotional realms, but also care of their soul and spirit, knowing that full recovery is not only possible, but sustainable for life when true nourishment is found within. I am also passionate about prevention of eating disorders, and I work with organizations like The Body Positive and Andrea's Voice Foundation to get the appropriate messages out to young people and families about healthy relationships with self and others, self-care, expression of feelings, emotions and creativity, assertive communications, and countering the cultural messages around food, nutrition, body image and weight.

Treatment Model: I utilize an integrated approach to healing according to what your personal treatment goals are. I practice Eclectic Integrative Psychotherapy, which means, I try to do what works for the individual client. Some people enjoy and respond to mindfulness, meditation, hypnotherapy, somatic therapy and a more spiritual or mind/body approach. Others prefer a more analytic psychodynamic approach. Still others would prefer a behavioral approach with more homework. It's really up to you. I incorporate several different modalities into my healing work. This includes Hypnotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Journal Writing, Art Therapy and Psychodynamic work. Because human personalities are so dynamic and multi-dimensional, usually all of these different techniques are integrated and can change as the therapy continues and as your goals change.
