Struggling with an eating disorder can impact every area of one's life including relationships, love life, work and school. I believe that struggles surrounding food and body image have a great deal of meaning and provides many men and women with a way of coping with difficulties in one's life. My treatment approach is one in which I work with clients to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying feelings and thoughts as well as experiences which can lead to symptoms. I feel that this approach combined with the relationship between therapist and client will lead to a deeper understanding and discovery of oneself and free a person to live a fuller, happy, and satisfying life free from the grip of an eating disorder, as well as depression and anxiety which often accompanies the eating disorder. I have extensive experience working with adult, young adult and adolescent women with eating disorders at the Renfrew Center of New York. I also have specific training working wit h children and adolescents.

Treatment Model: My study of Family Systems Theory has been essential to my work as a therapist for families, and has also illuminated my practice with individuals and couples. The tool set of Family Therapy can be very powerful in an individual therapy context when dealing with issues such as eating disorders, anxiety/panic, and depression. And because our intimate or spousal relationships can often be the screen on which we project our inherited difficulties, the family therapy model can also be a great resource for couples seeking a relationship of balance and longevity.

Ms. Aharon treats Anorexia and Bulimia in adult males and females. She also works with Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Night Eating Syndrome, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

The Eating Disorder Resource Center, one of the pioneering organizations in the field of eating disorders, is a privately run outpatient facility specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. We offer the most up to date, professional treatment available for problematic eating behaviors, food obsessions, and body image concerns. EDRC offers individual, group and family therapy. We continue to develop new programs in response to changing needs in the community. Currently, we have groups available for bulimics and for binge eaters. We also at different times run groups specializing in the needs of adolescents, men and/or family members.

All therapists are psychodynamically-trained and are skilled in the treatment of eating disorders. Treatment approaches are used which focus directly on changing the symptom, while also exploring the psychological functions of disordered eating behaviors. Additional specialties include the treatment of substance abuse, sexual abuse, family and couples treatment, and bereavement. A good patient-therapist match is considered when making a referral for treatment.

The Director of the Center, Judith Brisman, Ph.D., was among the first in her field to develop a treatment program for the eating-disordered patient. Dr. Brisman is co-author of Surviving an Eating Disorder: Strategies for Family and Friends (Siegel, Brisman & Weinshel, Harper Collins, 1997). She is also on the editorial board of Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, and she has published and lectured extensively regarding the interpersonal treatment of eating disorders. In addition to being the director of EDRC, she is an associate editor for the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis, is on the teaching faculty of the William Alanson White Institute and maintains a private practice in New York City.

Where words do not suffice, the creative process of art therapy has the power to bridge communication. I work with women's issues, in particular eating disorders. I help parents cope with their children's transition into and through the adolescent years. I work with teenagers, helping them to safely identify and verbalize feelings they cannot otherwise express, in a uniquely creative environment. At the first appointment, we talk about specific concerns and establish if we are a good fit. I utilize creativity and dialogue, and apply art interventions that will begin to open up a safe channel for communication

Pippa also hosts the following Art Therapy Group at her studio in Downtown Manhattan:

Women's Issues and Eating Disorders: Weaving, a historically empowering form of art for women, offers the opportunity to construct and deconstruct. Projected Start: Spring-Summer 2008 Participants: Women 18 and older, maximum 8 participants. Meeting Days: Weekly (specific day to be announced) Time/Length: Evening/ Weekend hours (specific time to be announced) Duration: Ongoing Cost: $40

Eating disorders are as lonely as they are painful. They can affect every aspect of your life - family, love life, work, school and even your spiritual beliefs. But you don't have to solve these problems on your own. I have been helping people with eating disorders for over 25 years. My work is called relational psychotherapy; while I respect cognitive-behavioral approaches, I am not a cognitive-behaviorist. The experience of being listened to and deeply understood feels like a gift that will restore your own natural ability to grow. My website www.joanlavender.com will give you more of a sense of how I work, information on eating disorders, Experiential Focusing and tips for handling your insurance provider. I see patients in New York City and Livingston, New Jersey.

Fran Weiss - Founder of The Body Image Transformation Experience™   B.I.T.E.: www.FranWeiss.com (see www.weightfocus.com for complete biography and interview). Fran's private practice specializes in working with people who struggle with their weight, body image, and perception of self.  Her focus is disordered eating and the body image distortions connected with gaining and losing weight.  She has worked extensively in individual and group psychotherapy to help patients explore the emotional connections surrounding their ambivalence to losing weight and their potential underlying "secondary gains" to being overweight or perceiving themselves as "fat"-- for example, does it afford them a feeling of protection?  Is it their armor?  An adjunct to her private practice, B.I.T.E. Workshop I explores participants' eating experiences, self perception, and resistance to change and lays the groundwork for Workshop II, which integrates gentle movement therapy with body image and motivational work.

The B.I.T.E. Series - The Body Image Transformation Experience™

B.I.T.E.™ provides an intensive therapeutic experience that combines innovative group psychotherapy techniques with body-oriented therapy. B.I.T.E.™ is designed for those who struggle with weight regulation, weight loss, size, perception of self, and body image.
