Treatment Model: The purpose of my work as a psychotherapist is to help my clients make positive changes by enabling them to learn new things about themselves and develop greater emotional flexibility. Although I focus on what's happening in the here and now, I believe that unresolved issues from the past tend to create obstacles that hold people back in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. This process makes it possible to achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, as well as more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others.

My therapeutic style is holistic and interactive; working collaboratively, I tailor the treatment to each unique individual. I am a graduate of NYU's Silver School of Social Work and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center, and have been trained in eating problems and body image issues at The Women's Therapy Centre Institute. Ultimately, we will examine the broader issues underlying the eating disorder related to your identity, values, and purpose, and help you bring about the important and lasting life changes you seek in your life. Please call me today. This approach really works!

The Eating Disorder Resource Center, one of the pioneering organizations in the field of eating disorders, is a privately run outpatient facility specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. We offer the most up to date, professional treatment available for problematic eating behaviors, food obsessions, and body image concerns. EDRC offers individual, group and family therapy. We continue to develop new programs in response to changing needs in the community. Currently, we have groups available for bulimics and for binge eaters. We also at different times run groups specializing in the needs of adolescents, men and/or family members.

All therapists are psychodynamically-trained and are skilled in the treatment of eating disorders. Treatment approaches are used which focus directly on changing the symptom, while also exploring the psychological functions of disordered eating behaviors. Additional specialties include the treatment of substance abuse, sexual abuse, family and couples treatment, and bereavement. A good patient-therapist match is considered when making a referral for treatment.

The Director of the Center, Judith Brisman, Ph.D., was among the first in her field to develop a treatment program for the eating-disordered patient. Dr. Brisman is co-author of Surviving an Eating Disorder: Strategies for Family and Friends (Collins Living, third edition, 2009) . Evolved Eating: My mission in the world is teaching women how to Mindfully create calm, confident, clear relationships with food, body & weight and experience more joyous, free & peaceful lives than they ever thought possible! I believe we spend far too much time dividing food up into good and bad, fearing food, depriving ourselves, fighting our desires, and hating ourselves. I propose we move into a Mindful Abundance Model: Live the moment, love the moment. Fear Less, Enjoy More! Evolved Eating is a process for anyone wanting to step away from diets, deprivation and guilt trips, break the rules, eat like a kid (yes, you can eat with your fingers), experience food, eating, body and life in a kinder, more playful, more holistic way. It's a judgment-free zone to meet, talk, share, grow, laugh and explore together.

Evolved Eating is A Mindfulness-Based, Body-based Process that teaches you how to free yourself from habitual behaviors and conditioning around food and weight; you learn to accept challenging thoughts, feelings and sensations without reacting; to restore confidence in your mind/body wisdom and to normalize your weight without dieting.

About Mindfulness: Mindfulness is not a religion. You do not have to shave your head or sit on a mountaintop. Mindfulness is a gentle and easy tool that with practice teaches you to simply observe your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations and just let them be. Stay present to whatever is actually happening without doing a thing--without reacting or running away. What is the benefit of Mindfulness? www.evolvedeating.com/mindfulness

Favorite Quote: ''Mindfulness practice isn't about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It's about befriending who we are already." ~ Pema Chodrun.

Treatment Model: Eating disorders are greedy illnesses. Left untreated, they will take everything they can, silencing the sufferer's authentic voice with symptoms of starving, binging, purging, and over-exercising. They become all-consuming and all-encompassing, leaving no space for anything nor anyone else. As a psychodynamic therapist with both personal experience and professional expertise with eating disorders, I know that individuals suffering from anorexia or bulimia may have similar symptoms, yet the underlying causality is unique to each individual. Paying careful attention to this, I customize treatment for each client according to her/his needs and goals. This may include: collaboration with physicians and nutritionists and family therapy. Drawing upon my own struggle with an eating disorder, I work with the client to foster a mutual sense of authenticity, empathy, and trust. I help the sufferer to draw upon her/his own courage, tenacity, resilience, and hope, so that she/he can disempower the eating disorder and connect to her/his own voice. This will ultimately be more fulfilling and meaningful than the chains of the illness.

Ms. Grunebaum treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. She also works with Compulsive Exercisers, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Laxative Abuse and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

The Monte Nido Manhattan ~ Eating Disorder Treatment of New York (EDTNY) provides a supportive environment with all the necessary components to help eating disorder clients cope with the underlying issues, current stressors, and biochemical factors that cause them to binge, purge, starve, and/or compulsively exercise. They utilize a multi-disciplinary treatment approach in order to address all aspects related to an eating disorder. Through comprehensive assessment and with feedback from clients and significant others, they develop an individualized treatment plan. Individualized treatment is an essential part of the program. The daily schedule includes a variety of group therapies and activities. Attention is directed toward creating a therapeutic milieu enabling clients to support each other in appropriate ways. Using psychodynamic, educational, cognitive-behavioral, and expressive group therapy formats, clients gain insight into their underlying eating disorder issues and interpersonal skill necessary for true and lasting recovery.

"Eating and exercise disorders are progressive and debilitating illnesses requiring medical, nutritional and psychological intervention. Individuals suffering from these disorders often need a structured environment to achieve recovery. However, all too often a person does well in a highly structured, regimented environment only to fall into relapse upon returning to a less structured situation. Our residential programs for anorexia treatment, bulimia treatment and exercise addiction treatment are designed to meet the individual needs of clients and their families in a way that gives them an increasingly higher level of responsibility and "teaches" them how to recover and sustain it. The atmosphere at Monte Nido and its affiliate programs, is professional and structured, but it is also warm, friendly, and family-like. We use highly dedicated staff members, many of whom are recovered themselves, thus serving as excellent role models. Our philosophy and environment inspires people to commit to overcoming obstacles that are interfering with the quality of their lives."

Treatment Model: I see therapy as a process of clarifying one's path in life and beginning to deal with things in a different way. My goal is to help people realize their authentic potential, which can be hidden under defensive behaviors. Eating disorders are painful and debilitating. They are a frantic effort to take control over life. While a person does own their own body, this illusion of control can go in circles, leaving a person feeling more helpless than ever. Treatment is always tailored to each person's unique needs and the first step is to remove any sense of shame. I work with adult women and men, many of whom are in the performing and fine arts. I treat a variety of different body-images and other problems and would be happy to consult with you about your situation.

Mr. Penn treats Anorexia and Bulimia; male and female adults. He also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Night Eating Syndrome, Laxative Abuse, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Bright clients of all ages who want the best in life are well matched to my work. They feel competent in other parts of their life, except in their interaction with food. I have 3 decades of experience working clinically, training and teaching the emotional interplay of obesity, weight regulation , bulimia and body image issues . I quickly get to the underpinnings of the roots of extreme unhappiness to work in turning this around.

My private practice is located in a professional brownstone on the Upper West Side, NYC. I specialize in individual and group psychotherapy. My treatment approach is psychodynamic, informed by newer models of psychoanalytic thinking. I am also trained in CBT and the experiential modalities of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (somatic work), and Contemplative Mindfulness approaches. I developed the Workshop, Weight Matters: The Body Image Transformation Experience BITE®. This is a unique 6 month group experience integrating talk therapy with sensorimotor (somatic-body) work without the use of touch. The Workshop integrates questions of “Why can’t I regulate my impulses and change my eating and negative thoughts about myself, ” with experiential regulatory techniques which move people to learn how to self sooth and gain mastery of their “call to food”.

As Faculty of The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NYC, and the New York Obesity Research Center, St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, I have direct access to developing treatment teams which is my forte. Sometimes it takes a village to move beyond an eating problem. I can help you accomplish this.
