Struggling with an eating disorder can impact every area of one's life including relationships, love life, work and school. I believe that struggles surrounding food and body image have a great deal of meaning and provides many men and women with a way of coping with difficulties in one's life. My treatment approach is one in which I work with clients to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying feelings and thoughts as well as experiences which can lead to symptoms. I feel that this approach combined with the relationship between therapist and client will lead to a deeper understanding and discovery of oneself and free a person to live a fuller, happy, and satisfying life free from the grip of an eating disorder, as well as depression and anxiety which often accompanies the eating disorder. I have extensive experience working with adult, young adult and adolescent women with eating disorders at the Renfrew Center of New York. Treatment Model: I work with my clients through a holistic approach incorporating cutting-edge neuroscience with MB-EAT (mindfulness based eating awareness techniques) in order to support both biochemistry imbalances that set the individual up for developing eating disorders and addictions as well as helping them understand how to change their habits and break self-destructive behaviors via exercises that rewire brain and automated behaviors (neuroplasticity). I offer brain and biochemistry type evaluation and coaching sessions also available via phone and Skype appointments.

Ms. Santini treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents and adults. She also works with Athletes, Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Night Eating Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Laxative Abuse.

I specialize in brain chemistry and nutrigenomics: how nutrition activates our genes. My work is centered around brain science due to the simple fact that our brain controls our body. Every imbalance - be it physically or mentally - is linked to specific neurotransmitters in our brain being out of whack. Neurotransmitters act like communicators to your body and are built up by specific amino acids and cofactor nutrients. Once you understand how your eating changes your brain, you can prevent genetic disposition from becoming genetic determination. It all starts in the brain. Simple, really. Eating right for you depends on how your brain is wired - that is why people respond differently to the same diet. You cannot cure yourself with medication, simply because it does not build up your brain, but only manages the symptoms. Forget about WILLPOWER - it's all about BRAINPOWER!

I focus on the eating disorder behavior by addressing underlying anxiety, depression, obsessive behavior, and relationship struggles along with concentrated efforts to change the behavior. With time and effort, eating disorders can be managed. I start with a consultation to make sure the fit between patient and therapist will work and that the eating disorder can be addressed on an outpatient basis. I often refer to and consult with psychiatrists and nutritionists to address all aspects of the disorder.

Treatment Philosophy: My center's treatment approach provides education, support, and practical feedback to help patients understand and resolve long-standing behavior patterns, habits and coping skills that have simply become too emotionally and physically expensive. In part by becoming more sensitive and compassionate with one self, patients can learn to identify new ways of coping without also negatively affecting their bodies and/or important relationships.  I prefer a team approach utilizing nutrition, psychiatry, family education and peer group support when possible.

I am also highly qualified to comprehensively assess the appropriate level of care one needs; not only because of my clinical experience in private practice, but also because of my prior role as the Director of the Renfrew Centers for Eating Disorders in NYC and NJ for 5 years. The Eating Disorder Resource Center, one of the pioneering organizations in the field of eating disorders, is a privately run outpatient facility specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. We offer the most up to date, professional treatment available for problematic eating behaviors, food obsessions, and body image concerns. EDRC offers individual, group and family therapy. We continue to develop new programs in response to changing needs in the community. Currently, we have groups available for bulimics and for binge eaters. We also at different times run groups specializing in the needs of adolescents, men and/or family members.

All therapists are psychodynamically-trained and are skilled in the treatment of eating disorders. Treatment approaches are used which focus directly on changing the symptom, while also exploring the psychological functions of disordered eating behaviors. Additional specialties include the treatment of substance abuse, sexual abuse, family and couples treatment, and bereavement. A good patient-therapist match is considered when making a referral for treatment.

The Director of the Center, Judith Brisman, Ph.D., was among the first in her field to develop a treatment program for the eating-disordered patient. Dr. Brisman is co-author of Surviving an Eating Disorder: Strategies for Family and Friends (Collins Living, third edition, 2009) . Email: lgrunebaum@nyc.rr.com

Treatment Model: Eating disorders are greedy illnesses. Left untreated, they will take everything they can, silencing the sufferer's authentic voice with symptoms of starving, binging, purging, and over-exercising. They become all-consuming and all-encompassing, leaving no space for anything nor anyone else. As a psychodynamic therapist with both personal experience and professional expertise with eating disorders, I know that individuals suffering from anorexia or bulimia may have similar symptoms, yet the underlying causality is unique to each individual. Paying careful attention to this, I customize treatment for each client according to her/his needs and goals. This may include: collaboration with physicians and nutritionists and family therapy. Drawing upon my own struggle with an eating disorder, I work with the client to foster a mutual sense of authenticity, empathy, and trust. I help the sufferer to draw upon her/his own courage, tenacity, resilience, and hope, so that she/he can disempower the eating disorder and connect to her/his own voice. This will ultimately be more fulfilling and meaningful than the chains of the illness.

Ms. Grunebaum treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents and adults. She also works with Athletes, Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating, Laxative Abuse and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Your candor and the depth of your self-reflection brought much illumination to this often puzzling and frustrating condition."

I offer a warm, supportive, confidential place where clients learn to expand their lives beyond self-destructive patterns that harm their bodies and hinder relationships. I am skilled in applying psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy principles, and eclectic therapies to treat all ages, families, and couples. Moreover, I often help form a treatment team: psychiatrists, nutritionists, dentists, acupuncturists, and integrative medicine practitioners, and am versed in working with clients in 12 step programs.

Fran Weiss - Founder of The Body Image Transformation Experience™   B.I.T.E.: www.FranWeiss.com (see www.weightfocus.com for complete biography and interview). Fran's private practice specializes in working with people who struggle with their weight, body image, and perception of self.  Her focus is disordered eating and the body image distortions connected with gaining and losing weight.  She has worked extensively in individual and group psychotherapy to help patients explore the emotional connections surrounding their ambivalence to losing weight and their potential underlying "secondary gains" to being overweight or perceiving themselves as "fat"-- for example, does it afford them a feeling of protection?  Is it their armor?  An adjunct to her private practice, B.I.T.E. Workshop I explores participants' eating experiences, self perception, and resistance to change and lays the groundwork for Workshop II, which integrates gentle movement therapy with body image and motivational work.

The B.I.T.E. Series - The Body Image Transformation Experience™

B.I.T.E.™ provides an intensive therapeutic experience that combines innovative group psychotherapy techniques with body-oriented therapy. B.I.T.E.™ is designed for those who struggle with weight regulation, weight loss, size, perception of self, and body image.

WHO IS B.I.T.E.® FOR?

For those who struggle with weight regulation, weight loss, size, perception of self and body image.
For those who appreciate that one's psychological/emotional life can get in the way of maintaining a food plan.
For those who have lost weight, yet whose self-perception is not changing.
For those who are having trouble coming to terms with the new, evolving “you”.
For those who need help to find the courage necessary to move away from the familiar and onto unfamiliar ground.
For those who need to develop specific strategies for integrating intellectual and emotional understanding with weight loss and body image transformation for successful long-term outcomes.

Treatment Model: I am a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of eating issues. I offer individual psychotherapy as well as group therapy and use a team approach to address major concerns, making sure that all medical and nutritional issues are attended to. I truly appreciate how difficult it can be to let go of an eating disorder, and understand that there is often major ambivalence about the prospect of recovery. Yet, I am committed to your process of recovery, despite its difficult and challenging moments. I have seen people recover from eating disorders, and have witnessed their unique journeys as they discovered new ways of coping and had important realizations about themselves and their relationships. I integrate several scientifically validated modes of therapy (Cognitive therapy, Dialectical-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy) to help people achieve their goals and reach beyond the surface issues. I also use worksheets that I have created to facilitate the process, but always keep in mind the quality of the relationship between the client and myself.
