Treatment Model: The Eating Disorder Program at Calgary Counselling Centre operates on the principle that there are underlying physical, psychological, social and familial issues that may support an eating disorder. The potentially debilitating and life-threatening consequences of eating disorders require the Eating Disorder Program to work within a multi-disciplinary team approach. This requires case management and continued consultation between the primary counsellor, dietician, family physician and where possible, a psychiatrist. A team focus provides the client with a comprehensive scope of treatment. Within individual therapy and the group setting the client learns to manage relationship issues, to discover underlying causes of their disorder, develop insights and make behavioural changes to manage their eating in a healthier manner.

The Calgary Counselling Centre treats Anorexia and Bulimia; males and females, children, adolescents, and adults. They  also work with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Treatment Model: I see my role as being a “guide”- gently supporting and encouraging you along the path of healing and self-discovery.  I believe: that to facilitate long-lasting change and to feel as good as you possibly can about yourself, all aspects of your being must be integrated into the healing process: mind, body, and spirit;  that you have the answers to your problems; not me. Thus, I encourage you to re-connect with your own unique internal wisdom and inner voice; in your ability to heal, grow, change, and become the person you’ve always dreamed of being and that on our journey together, this and more is possible. The approaches I use in psychotherapy are Woman-Centred and Family Systems.

Ms. Kane treats Anorexia and Bulimia in adult women. Ms. Kane also works with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Treating Eating Disorders Since the Year: 1995

While I work with a number of “presenting problems”, I primarily provide psychotherapy services to women of all ages, shapes, and sizes who have one thing in common: a relationship with food and their body that is so problematic that they need professional help to deal with it and to heal.  I know this problem all too well as I survived a deadly battle with anorexia and bulimia in my teens and early 20’s and have lived to tell the story.  My 15+ years of full recovery is a testament to the fact that disordered eating recovery is possible and that one can lead a brilliant, juicy, and fabulous life after healing.  If I could do it, you can too! Whether you struggle with anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, or binge-eating, I can help.  I have worked with countless women over the years and assisted them in outsmarting disordered eating for life.  I have a special gift in this area having been through it myself and along with my extensive counselling training and work experience, have come to know what works and what doesn’t. With my knowledge and experience, I can give you the understanding and tools you need to get "unstuck" and free yourselves from the jaws of food/weight/body image obsession and help you leap into the fabulous life you deserve and want...

Ms. Kane is a member in good standing of the B.C. Clinical Counsellors Association and has met all of the requirements of this professional body to have been given the designation of Registered Clinical Counsellor.

If your life were presented as a classified ad in the careers section, would you be eager to apply?

"Wanted: Woman to work tirelessly in the service of others while denying she has any worth or value of her own. Must be proficient at self-denial and disconnect with a strong background in passive-aggressive acting out against herself and others".

Or: "Wanted: Man who knows what it means to live a life of 'quiet desperation'. Must have lost all sense of passion, meaning, and purpose. Experience with a mood disorder and addictive attachments to substances an asset but not required".

It seems that in our harried existence, we are often left struggling to find balance - in our work and home life, in our relationships with our partner, family and friends, in our relationships with food and alcohol, even in our relationship with ourselves. In Italian, to do something "en modo sano" means to find a healthy and balanced approach, and that is the foundation of my counselling practice - helping clients discover a balanced and effective path to health, healing, and reconnection.

Our unique treatment program emphasizes underlying psychological, emotional, and relational conflicts. Patients can then start the crucial process of working on the underlying core issues that cause or perpetuate the eating disorder. The program includes traditional therapeutic methods and science-based best practices for treating Eating Disorders. We use the best of western and eastern medical philosophies, as well as a diverse range of complimentary healing therapies.

Beau Cote is a unique and progressive residential centre exclusively devoted to helping women aged 19 and over in their struggle with anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating/binge eating and other related disorders; Compulsive Exercising, Food Addiction, Compulsive Overeating, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The Beau Cote "beautiful dimensions" model is designed in a holistic way to be responsive to the mind, body, feelings, relational, and spiritual dimensions of each person in our care. Only when the whole person is treated can recovery from an eating disorder begin.

Payment Options: Money Order/Cashiers Check, Credit Cards

Patients live in semi-private rooms in a home-like, yet structured environment that includes 24-hour care and emotional support. This environment allows you to focus on your recovery and resolve long- standing problems faster and more completely than is possible in other lower intensive and less structured levels of care. The number of residential days varies from a minimum of 30 up to 90 days, depending upon our initial assessment of your clinical needs and an ongoing daily review of your progress. We have found that this length of time is more effective for long-term stability and recovery from an eating disorder.

*Training programs and consultations for therapists and interns.

You may have been put on diets or diet pills, forced to eat when you weren't hungry, weighed and lectured by well meaning (or not so well meaning?) doctors or relatives, or felt otherwise disrespected and intruded upon. I will not be weighing you or telling you what or what not to eat. This may feel like a relief, or you may not like that. Some people become dependent on others to tell them what to eat. I will simply be encouraging you to sense your hunger and satiation points, and to notice when you can follow them as guides, and when it seems too difficult. We may choose to include journal, art, or movement work, and guided fantasies to help you express what the eating problem has been trying to say. Ultimately, you will learn to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. But in the meantime, when you cannot always do this, we will use the symptoms to point us to the triggers and issues in your life that you have been using bingeing, purging, starving and/or dieting to solve. We work these through one by one, until you feel strong enough to face these difficulties without depriving or punishing yourself with food. My Treatment Model incorporates Feminist Object Relations, EMDR/DNMS/LI, Psychosomatic Integration, ego state work and trauma work. For a description of PsychoSomatic Integration click here: http://www.psychotherapist.org/~judylight/#PSI.
