Current Research and News:
Eating Disorders in the Elderly. BACKGROUND: Eating disorders
in the elderly are often overlooked. When they occur, significant
morbidity and mortality result. In this study we review all existing
literature on eating disorders in the elderly and provide practical
guidelines for clinicians in recognizing and managing eating disorders
in the elderly. METHODS: A literature search using Medline, PubMed, Web
of Knowledge, and PsychINFO revealed 48 published cases of eating
disorders in people over the age of 50 years. RESULTS: The mean age was
68.6 years (range 50-94), and the majority (88%) of cases were females.
The majority (81%) of cases had anorexia nervosa, and 10% had bulimia
nervosa. Late onset eating disorders were more common (69%) than early
onset. Comorbid psychiatric conditions existed in 60%, most commonly
major depression. Management with a combination of behavioral and
pharmacologic interventions was most successful, although only 42% were
treated successfully. Mortality was high (21%) secondary to the eating
disorder and its complications. CONCLUSION: Eating disorders do occur in
the elderly and should be included in the differential diagnosis of
unexplained weight loss in the elderly. Source: Int Psychogeriatr. 2010

Overweight? Obese? Or Normal Weight? Americans Have Hard Time
Gauging Their Weight. New poll finds 30% of those overweight
think they are normal size. Connecticut, USA (September 2,
2010) - For many Americans fat is the new "norm." More and more people
are unable to accurately describe themselves using their
height-to-weight ratio - known as body mass index - the scale that
determines levels of overweight and obesity, a new Harris Interactive/HealthDay
poll found.
The poll revealed that 30 percent of overweight people think they're
actually normal size, 70 percent of obese people feel they are merely
overweight, and 39 percent of morbidly obese people think they are
overweight but not obese. That means fat may be becoming the new normal,
raising the specter of increasing rates of health threats such as
diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. "While there are some
people who have body images in line with their actual BMI [body mass
index], for many people they are not, and this may be where part of the
problem lies," said Regina Corso, vice president of Harris Poll
Solutions. "If they do not recognize the problem or don't recognize the
severity of the problem, they are less likely to do something about it."
Among other findings of the poll, conducted online Aug. 17-19 with 2,418
adults ages 18 and older: Most respondents who felt they were heavier than they should be blamed
lack of exercise as the main cause, with 52 percent of overweight
people, 75 percent of obese people and 75 percent of morbidly obese
people saying they didn't exercise enough. Food consumption was seen
as the lesser of two culprits, with 36 percent of overweight
respondents, 48 percent of obese respondents and 27 percent of those
morbidly obese feeling they ate more than they "should in general." "In
the mindset of most Americans, they're not looking at this as a food
problem as much as an exercise problem," Corso said. "Three out of five
Americans overall are saying they don't exercise as much as they
should." On the subject of weight-loss remedies, the poll found
Americans deemed surgery the most effective method, followed by
prescription drugs, then drugs and diet-food supplements obtained
over-the-counter. "Americans like the quick fix and that's what they
think the surgery is even though there are so many other things that
work," Corso said. "The American public knows this but it's hard and
it's something that they're not quite ready to do. This wake-up call
still isn't ringing as loudly as it could."
Memorial for people with eating disorders in UK. The first
national Service of Dedication for lives lost to eating disorders has
taken place in London's Southwark Cathedral. The charity Beat estimates
that eating disorders affect 1.6 million people in the UK. A fifth will
die from associated health problems. About 300 guests were at the
service, including those with disorders and families of those who have
died. Beat is hoping that the event will raise awareness of mortality
rates.
For Professionals - Conferences/Seminars/Online Courses/Study Groups:
Mindful Eating Teacher Training Alliance (METTA) - Wrestling with Desire:
The Challenges of Mindful Eating. This innovative and dynamic Mindful
Eating Teacher Training is now open for registration. The course is designed
for professionals interested in integrating mindful eating and meditation
practices when working with groups and/or individuals dealing with
compulsive eating issues. It's also an opportunity to meet like-minded
professionals, work together on interesting assignments in between class
sessions and have access to up-date-research, helpful resources and
information. Wrestling with Desire: The Challenges of Mindful Eating
explores the dynamics of compulsive eating and specific ways to transform
its grip. They will examine different types of craving, voices of desire and
false promises of satisfaction that feed and sustain compulsive eating
habits. In addition, they will examine the mindful eating guidelines and
disciplines practices that are part of every tradition, ancient and modern,
and the ways they employ physical food, including the imperative to share
abundance with others, to access the transcendent desire for spiritual
wholeness. Some other areas of exploration include: The “crisis of desire”
that comes from mindlessly chasing after and relying on fleeting pleasures
such as a certain body weight clothing size or food plan; the pushes and
pulls of pleasure that distort our thinking; the link between compulsive
eating and feelings of inner lack, deprivation, despair and insatiable
hunger; Insight into the paradoxical nature of desire: no matter how much,
how often or what we eat, the craving for “more” is destined to return;
ancient recipes, “food for the heart,” based on cultivating qualities that
focus on gratitude, generosity, intention, virtue and contentment;
opportunities to “wrestle with desire” through creative uses of food in
everyday life (snacks, meals, eating in restaurants, shopping in
supermarkets, etc. Some of the key goals include: Core meditation and
mindful eating skills based on direct practice; intellectual knowledge,
METTA precept-practices and professional support; qualify to teach the core
METTA outline to students, clients and groups. Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D., is a
Berkeley-based social psychologist and specializes in mindful eating,
depression and relationships. Dr. Kabatznick is on the Board of the Center
for Mindful Eating, www.tcme.org, and
teaches mindful eating classes for both clients and professionals. For nine

Online Research - Seeking Participants:
Are you the parent of a child who is currently receiving outpatient
treatment for Anorexia Nervosa? If so, researchers would like to
invite you to participate in an anonymous study that examines the
experience of caring for a child with Anorexia Nervosa. They are
interested in how a child’s eating disorder affects the parents and
family – including coping reactions and significant relationships. Few
medical or psychological resources are available to support parents who
may face their own challenges with respect to the diagnosis of and
treatment for their child’s Anorexia. They hope their research findings will
contribute to enhanced understanding of how a child’s illness affects
the families so that more support services for parents can be developed
and provided. If your child is between the ages of 9-22, is receiving
outpatient treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, and is currently living with
you at home, they invite you to participate in this important study.
Participation will involve completing a series of questionnaires online
that will take approximately 15-30 minutes. Your name and any
identifying information will not be linked to your responses. Publications or presentations emanating from the research will not
include individual responses, only group data will be presented. Please

Marketing Ideas:
Taking Care of Your Source of Referrals: Every time someone makes a
referral to you, they are taking some risk. They are putting their own
judgment and professionalism on the line by saying that you are worth
the time of the client. If the referral does not work out well, then it
reflects on the person who made the referral. With each referral,
you need to INCREASE the confidence placed in you by the referring
professional. This can be accomplished in several ways. First, be
sure to make an extra effort to thank the person who refers to you with
a follow-up call, email, or a card. Something that says, "There is no
compliment better than a referral, and I appreciate the trust you have
placed in me." Do not let that professional sit wondering if anything
happened on your end. Small gestures make a big difference in other's view of your treatment.
Generally, the referral source is giving out three names to ensure that
you are one of those names make sure that
that person is confident that you will take the referral seriously and
professionally.
