Current Research and News:

Sad News:The number of websites promoting anorexia and bulimia (not treatment) has increased 470% in a single year, according to the Internet trend research firm Optenet at http://www.optenet.com.

Reduced perception of bodily signals in anorexia nervosa. Researchers: Pollatos O, Kurz AL, Albrecht J, Schreder T, Kleemann AM, Schöpf V, Kopietz R, Wiesmann M, Schandry R. Department of Psychology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany; Department of Neuroradiology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany; Clinic of Neurology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany.OBJECTIVE: Interoceptive awareness is known to be impaired in eating disorders. To date, it has remained unclear whether this variable is related to the construct of interoceptive sensitivity. Interoceptive sensitivity is considered to be an essential variable in emotional processes. The objective of the study was to elucidate this potential relationship and to clarify whether general interoceptive sensitivity is reduced in anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Using a heartbeat perception task, interoceptive sensitivity was assessed in 28 female patients with anorexia nervosa and 28 matched healthy controls. Questionnaires assessing interoceptive awareness (EDI) and several other variables were also administered. RESULTS: Patients with anorexia nervosa displayed significantly decreased interoceptive sensitivity. They also had more difficulties in interoceptive awareness. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to a decreased ability to recognize certain visceral sensations related to hunger, there is a generally reduced capacity to accurately perceive bodily signals in anorexia nervosa. This highlights the potential importance of interoceptive sensitivity in the pathogenesis of eating disorders. SOURCE: Eat Behav. 2008 Dec;9(4):381-8. Epub 2008 Mar 4.

Books, Resources, and Media:

What Every Therapist Needs to Know about Treating Eating and Weight Issues by Karen R. Koenig. Therapists often encounter clients with mild to moderate eating and weight issues, less severe than anorexia, bulimia, or binge-eating disorder. They emerge as minor themes that lurk behind major presenting problems such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, and marital discord; and therapists who aren't looking for them may miss opportunities. Koenig’s book is written for practitioners who lack expertise in this area, and provides clinical strategies and therapeutic techniques to explore clients’ feelings about food and their bodies to get at the root of these issues. It includes descriptions of how food and weight problems surface in conjunction with psychological and medical conditions, as well as how they create difficulties in various life stages and situations. Packed with insights and practical tips, this unique book teaches clinicians how to help clients make peace with food and the scale and balance nutrition and exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Business Building and Marketing Ideas:

Filling out our application.  We find that many therapists fill out the categories listed on our site and will leave one glaring exception such as indicating that they do not treat "Food Addiction."  You must realize that many people reading your profile are "self diagnosing" and may not completely understand the terms listed.  Most likely they saw the terms in a book or heard them on TV and do not have a clear understanding of what these descriptions actually indicate.  The point is that you can be liberal in indicating what types of clients you can see because the self-diagnosis is most often not the correct diagnosis.  If you want to update your profile, all you need to do is enter your name and any information you would like to update.  www.edreferral.com/membership.htm

Looking at your Profile: Refreshing your web page.  A web browser is the program your computer uses to find web pages on the internet.  Examples are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and AOL has its own browser.  Each program can store web pages so that if you go back to the same page, it will load faster.  The downside is that if you want EDReferral to make a change to your profile and then you go back to look at the EDReferral.com web site it will appear on your computer as if the information has not changed.  The way to fix this problem is different with each web browser.  The term you want to learn is "refreshing" your web browser.  Most of the web programs have a button with a curved arrow or a set of curved arrows which indicate that this is the "refresh" button.  Sometimes you even need to hold down the CNTL button as you click on the refresh button.  The important thing is that if we tell you that we updated your profile and it does not look changed, there may be a computer issue on your local computer.  If you still think your profile has not been updated, you can make sure by checking the same web page on a different computer.
