Barriers to Help-Seeking in
Young Women with Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Exploration in a
Longitudinal Community Survey.
Few with eating disorders (EDs) access evidence-based treatments. We
conducted a prospective exploration of help-seeking by 57 community women
with bulimic-type EDs using the Framework approach of familiarization,
identifying themes, indexing, charting and mapping and interpretation. The
mean age of the sample was 33 years. Results found women sought help for
concerns regarding perceived (over) weight rather than for eating, although
many women would have welcomed questions from professionals regarding eating
behaviours. Empathy, providing information and hope were considered
important features of health professionals to provide a positive experience
of help-seeking. Specific personal barriers to treatment included low
motivation, fear of stigma, and cost. Greater clinician and community
awareness of and action on these issues would likely help close "the gap"
for effective help-seeking by those with EDs. Source: Eat Disord. 2011

Unmet
Need for Treatment in the Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review of Eating
Disorder Specific Treatment Seeking Among Community Cases.
Objective: To systematically review the literature on the proportion of
community cases with a diagnosable eating disorder who seek eating disorder
specific treatment. Method: CSA PsycInfo, Medline/PubMed and Scopus
databases were searched for relevant articles that were written in English,
published between January 1989 and January 2010, and satisfied three
selection criteria: 1) recruited a representative sample of community cases;
2) used a standardized eating disorder screening instrument; 3) reported
percentage of cases with eating disorders that sought appropriate (mental
health or medical) treatment specifically for their eating disorder.
Reference lists were also scanned for relevant articles. Results: Of 200
articles identified, 14 met inclusion criteria, comprising 1581 participants
with a diagnosable eating disorder. The pooled proportion seeking treatment
was 23.2% (95% CI=16.6, 31.4), however this estimate was associated with
significant variability. The proportion seeking treatment for weight loss
ranged from 30% to 73%, indicating that individuals with eating disorders
are much more likely to receive treatment for a perceived problem with
weight. Discussion: The literature provides a complex picture, as a minority
receive appropriate mental health care, yet many receive treatment for
weight loss. Significant gaps in the literature currently exist and future
research needs to focus on treatment seeking in the young and elderly,
males, and in countries outside of Australia and the United States. There is
a need for interventions that assist community members, health professionals
and treatment services to recognize eating disorders and understand their
associated burden and the benefit of providing appropriate and timely
treatment. Source: Clin Psychol Rev. 2011 Mar 23;31(5):727-735.

Taking The First Step - Males Wait Longer
Before Seeking Help. More than one million males in America are affected by
eating disorders. But men are more reluctant than women to seek help. The
perception that eating disorders are a “female problem” make it less likely
that men will take the first step to seek the life-saving treatment that’s
readily available. Males can develop the same symptoms as women, but instead
of focusing on weight loss, they can become preoccupied with their weight
and shape. They may feel compelled to exercise and may do so at the expense
of other activities in their lives. Sports, such as gymnastics, or
wrestling, where weight and shape are scrutinized, may trigger the
development of an eating disorder to attain an unrealistic ideal. Males with
eating disorders are at an increased risk for other self-destructive
behaviors, including substance abuse or suicide. Males are also less likely
to seek help for anxiety and depression which are common people with eating
disorders. Treatment like cognitive-behavioral therapy is shown to be
especially effective for co-occurring diagnoses of eating disorders and
anxiety. At Rogers Memorial Hospital, patients who received residential
treatment for co-occurring anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
had similar lengths of stay as patients who were treated for just an eating
disorder or OCD only. The hospital also has a separate treatment program for
males ages 12 and older, to address issues that are specific for males. If
you’re a male with an eating disorder or know someone who is, don’t wait to
get help. Contact Rogers Memorial Hospital at 800-767-4411 for a free
screening or more information. You can learn more about the many specialized
programs at Rogers by visiting their website at

- Eating Recovery Center's Partial Hospitalization Program. Eating Recovery
Center’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers the intensity and structure
of residential treatment without supervised overnight stays. The
PHP offers 11.5 hours of programming seven
days per week, supporting patients through all meals and snacks and
providing the necessary structure and containment to achieve symptom
interruption and/or weight restoration. Combined with daytime medical
support, the strategic intensity of Eating Recovery Center’s Partial
Hospitalization Program can provide a non-residential treatment resource for
individuals requiring a higher level of care. PHP’s integrated treatment
philosophy combines medical, psychiatric, nutritional and psychological
elements to give patients and families effective tools to support lasting
behavioral change. Grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and
the Pillars of Recovery, PHP’s well-rounded curriculum offers opportunities
to practice relationships and interactions outside of treatment through
interactive group sessions, as well as unsupervised overnight stays at home
or in apartments located close to the treatment center. Partial
Hospitalization is a critical stage of the full continuum of care in eating
disorders recovery, representing a step-down from Inpatient and Residential
levels of care and a precursor to Outpatient treatment, allowing patients to
practice recovery skills prior to returning to their community and
outpatient team. Beginning in June 2011, Eating Recovery Center’s PHP will
be housed in a state-of-the-art facility neighboring its Behavioral Hospital
for Children and Adolescents in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood. For

SPEAKING OUT ABOUT ED Documentary Film - DVD's Available: Five
years in the making, NORMAL In Schools (NIS) Founder and President, Robyn
Hussa, explores the physiological, biological and social elements
contributing to the growing problem of eating disorders (ED) and obesity in
our society. Through the NIS nonprofit arts programs in schools and
treatment hospitals, she has had the unique opportunity to communicate with
clinicians, families and sufferers of this tragic disorder and provide hope
in recognizing the pain and suffering of both the inflicted and their
families. This documentary film is penetrating and insightful in shedding
light on a highly misunderstood mental illness, while shattering
misconceptions about ED and obesity. SPEAKING OUT ABOUT ED is a 40-minute
documentary film beginning with a solid overview of the symptoms and types
of disorders and a basic discussion of the biological underpinnings.
Professionals explain why eating disorders are a disease not a "choice." In
addition, they make a very important point that can't be stressed enough.
Disordered eating behaviors, no matter what kind, are a coping mechanism to
deal with feelings rather than to alleviate appearance concerns. The film
features some of the world's leading experts on eating disorders such as Dr.
