Current Research and News: Horizon Blue Cross Settles Eating Disorders Suit - Class action claimed company wrongfully denied payment for treatments. Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey has tentatively settled a class action pending in federal court in Newark, New Jersey involving reimbursements for medical expenses relating to the treatment of eating disorders. The terms of the settlement must still be approved by the court. Although Horizon covered treatments related to eating disorders (primarily anorexia and bulimia), including hospitalization, outpatient treatment, psychotherapy and nutritional counseling, there were benefit limits on such treatments. Under the settlement terms, Horizon has agreed to pay claims for eating disorders that were denied because they exceeded the plans’ maximum benefit for non-biologically based mental illness. Horizon has also agreed to give parity treatment to eating disorder claims for Horizon insured's in the future and to enhance its appeals procedure by providing the right to select review by an eating disorder specialist of all claims denied on the basis of medical necessity. The attorney who represented the class action plaintiffs, Bruce H. Nagel, called it "a landmark settlement which should change the way insurance carriers view eating disorders" and said he urged other insurers to "get in line with this settlement." A Horizon spokesman said the insurer was "pleased" with the settlement. Is there a relationship between parental self-reported psychopathology and symptom severity in adolescents with anorexia nervosa? The current study aimed to screen for indications of psychopathology displayed by the parents of adolescents diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), and examine the relationship between severity of adolescent eating disorder symptoms and parental psychopathology. Sixty female adolescents diagnosed with DSM-IV-TR AN (restricting-type and binge-purge-type) were administered the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and parents completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R). As compared to established non-patient norms, both fathers and mothers of adolescents with AN reported greater levels of obsessive compulsive behaviors, hostility, depression, and anxiety as measured by the SCL-90-R. In addition, duration of AN was positively associated with hostility scores in fathers, and global EDE scores were associated with hostility in mothers. While parental scores on the SCL-90 were elevated as compared to community samples, results of this study do not support a direct influence of parental psychopathology on symptom severity of adolescent AN. Increasing rates of hostility scores in parents with increased duration of AN may represent either a response to the presence of the disorder or be a maintaining factor for AN. Idol's Kara: I Sought Treatment for Binge Eating. Years after overcoming an eating disorder, Kara DioGuardi says being in the spotlight on American Idol today has caused some of her past demons to resurface. In a new interview, the newest judge on the Fox reality show reveals that she suffered from an eating disorder in her teens which caused her to obsessively overeat. "I had kind of a binge eating disorder where instead of dealing with my emotions, I would stuff them down with food. I never threw up or starved myself," she tells Extra. "It was an eating disorder. I actually went into a treatment center for it." The 38-year-old songwriter says that the disorder stemmed from being unable to find a creative outlet. However, things turned around when she discovered her love for music. "The moment I started doing music, the moment I did what I loved to do in my life and committed to it, I don't have those problems anymore... I have my outlet." Though now that she's in the spotlight on the highly-rated show, she says she has moments of insecurity once again, saying, "I had this craziness in my head that I had to be perfect all the time and I face it now on Idol 25 years later where it's kind of, 'Oh god, why did I say that? Why did I do this?' -- but I made this commitment in my life to face my fears and if I am afraid of something I make sure I do it." If you have an eating disorder, you are not alone. In addition to individual and group therapy, their patients engage in several innovative therapies designed to help them learn, grow, and change. Patients are involved in Equine, Canine, Art, Challenge Course, and Recreational Activities. While their female patients address body image issues through movement therapy, males discover how to understand and respect their bodies through strength training. This exhibit opens with a free reception on Friday, February 13 from 7:00 -11:00pm and continues through March 2, 2009. At the age of 53, after living with anorexia for fifteen years, Shaw finally admitted she was anorexic and entered a residential treatment center. Once in treatment, Shaw was given the assignment of producing a written time line of her life highlighting significant events that may have led to her eating disorder. Shaw, finding the assignment to be cliche, ignored the assignment until she developed her own way of responding to the task. Her idea took the form of a life-size, standing paper cut-out of her body titled Running on Empty. The piece did not contain dates or events, yet it revealed how anorexia had become embedded in every cell and every system of her body, dictating every action, every feeling, and every thought she had. Sculpture then became Shaw's way to express the emotional and mental bondage of her illness. Shaw's sculpture provided her with the opportunity to reflect on her emotions, relationships, and the events of her life. For Shaw, sculpture is more precise than words. Sculptured provides Shaw with a way to record her progress and keeps her engaged in recovery. For more information contact shaw.judith@gmail.com.
