Relational competence and eating disorders. Researchers: Cozzi F, Ostuzzi R. Centre for Eating Disorders, Casa di Cura Villa Margherita, Arcugnano (VI), Italy. Eating Disorders are very widespread within the adolescent population. A possible interpretation and the comprehension of such forms of psychopathology may revolve around the failure to develop a well-defined personal identity, an incapacity to achieve a sense of differentiation with respect to others, an incapacity to measure oneself against others, dependence on others, the fear of rejection and a sense of inadequacy. This study explores the relational styles and behaviour of individuals suffering from eating disorders and their influence on the development of the personality, with reference being made in particular to self-valuation, dependence on others and levels of differentiation. A sample population of 90 women with eating disorders was studied. The subjects were subdivided into 3 groups (30 with restricting anorexia nervosa, 30 with binge-eating/purging anorexia nervosa and 30 with bulimia nervosa), overlapping in terms of age, duration of disorders and interrelation style, using the Relational Competence Test. The most significant results of this study concern the question of the definition of an autonomous personal identity. This process seems to be in progress in young women suffering from bulimia nervosa who appear to be driven towards a "definition of the self in opposition" with the consequent tendency towards relational experiences outside their own family. In women with binge-eating/purging AN moreover an awareness of the difference between the self and others and of their state of dependence would appear to be present, however behaviour aimed at the determination of an autonomous self is not evident. In women with restricting anorexia nervosa a definition of the identity is totally absent; these women develop an omnipotent self in their 'oneness' with others. These relational aspects lead to the identification of a continuum between restricting anorexia nervosa, binge-eating/purging anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in an evolutionary perspective regarding the self-with-others. PMID: 17615495, Aust N Z J Psychiatry. 2007 Apr;41(4):351-8. Eating disorders across two cultures: does the expression of psychological control vary? Researchers: Soh N, Surgenor LJ, Touyz S, Walter G. Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Services, New South Wales, Australia. OBJECTIVE: Because both the expression of eating disorder (ED) symptoms and preferred psychological control styles may be affected by culture, the purpose of the present study was to examine whether the expression of psychological control in women with EDs varies across two cultures. METHOD: North European Australian and Chinese Singaporean women (n = 117) with anorexia nervosa (n = 36), bulimia nervosa (n = 13) and eating disorders not otherwise specified (n = 3), and without an ED (n = 65) recruited in Australia and Singapore completed a multidimensional inventory assessing sense of control, domains of control, preferred means by which to gain control, and motivation for control. RESULTS: Although the normative control profile for each culture differed slightly, control profiles among those with an ED were very similar across both cultures. However, the directionality and extent of specific aspects of control pathology associated with the presence of an ED differed across cultures. North European Australians with an ED were much more deviant from the cultural norm than their Chinese Singaporean ED counterparts in relation to overall sense of control, methods of gaining control, and control in the domain of body. Chinese Singaporean woman with an ED were much more deviant from the cultural norm than their North European Australian ED counterparts in the domain of control over impulses. CONCLUSIONS: Having an ED powerfully distorts psychological control irrespective of culture. However the degree, directionality, and form of the displacement from normal control styles is also culture dependent. This has implications for treatments that attempt to redress or correct control issues in people with an ED in other cultures. PMID: 17464722. The event is taking place at the Philadelphia Airport Marriott, Philadelphia, PA on November 8th - 11th, 2007. The 2007 Conference is dedicated to an exploration of eating disorders recovery. The essential components and correlates, even the definition, of recovery and the recovery process are still very controversial topics in our field. While it is crucial to determine how recovery occurs and what factors most support recovery, it is difficult to do so when it is not yet clear how best to formulate and measure what getting better actually means. The keynote speakers for this conference are Arianna Huffington, Anne E. Becker, MD, PhD, ScM, Kelly Klump, PhD, Michael Levine, PhD and Scott Crow, MD. This workshop will focus in on breaking the dieting cycle, learning to listen to your body, gain body acceptance, and stopping emotional or compulsive eating. When you are emotionally hungry you need to tend to the emotion. Only you can know the difference. Diets don’t work. The best way to gain weight is to go on a diet. This is about developing a healthy lifestyle where food is not the enemy. Unsure if you are an emotional eater? Have you ever turned to food because you were bored, lonely, tired, angry, or procrastinating? Ever avoided a social situation because of how you feel about your body? Do you feel guilty or ashamed after eating? Dates of seminars: September 10th thru 13th; November 5th thru the 8th; and December 10th thru the 13th. Research Studies on Eating Disorders: The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is set to conduct a new long-term study of anorexia nervosa in 240 teens, ages 12 to 18. Researchers plan to start recruiting subjects on May 1 and will follow subjects for a four-year period. Six research facilities in the United States and Canada will work together with the NIMH on the new study, which will focus on early-intervention treatments. Experts believe that a combination of factors leads to anorexia. American society's worship of ultra-thinness places immense pressure on women - and on men. Research has found that a woman with an anorexic mother or sister is more likely to become anorexic herself. Also, parents who are highly focused on appearance, frequently go on diets, or make negative comments about their children's bodies, are more likely to have a child who develops anorexia. Other factors which may lead to anorexia include trauma, a perfectionistic personality, and a genetic predisposition to the disorder. Getting help early on is crucial to effective treatment. Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia (or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa. The study consists of 6 visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the course of the study. If interested, call Erinne Meenaghan, N.P. at 617-724-7393 or email nedresearchstudies@partners.org.
